Just been rung up by a lovely lady who has 2 horses she wants to loan/sell. Both sound nice but one had a hernia after a bout of colic due to a sudden change in the hay. She says it has got alot smaller since and is now about a quarter of the size.

Can anyone help, as I've no experience on hernia's, whether this is something I should worry about for the future or should I pass on this horse? Basically any info anyone can give really. Thankyou.

Have you seen a photo of the horse?

If not - ask her to send you a photo for confirmation and also a copy of the hernia site.

If you still are keen on the horse, speak to your vet prior to viewing to get his opinion. If you do view, and still like then obviously you can get your vet to look specifically at the hernia site at the vetting.

Lex has got a hernia - about the size of a 10p.

We bought her as a 3 year old - vet at the time said she had probably always had it. She is 6 now and it hasn't caused any problems yet.

I think there are different types of hernia though - some of them are more problematic than others. Could you phone your vet for advice without committing to a vetting and running up a bill?
