My new mare has only been at new yard for 3 days now but she has become really attached to her field mate who is also a mare. They have spent 2 days in the field together and when I go to bring my mare in the other begins to call as soon as we are out of sight. My mare then starts calling back and goes mad when she is in her stable calling for her, box walking and getting herself into a right state. This morning the other mare was turned out before her and into a different field. My mare was getting herself into a state again and was a real pig to handle when I was turning her out. She can see her friend in the adjoining field which is also across a stream and has been stood by the fence all day so far and pacing along the line of the fence. So I’m just wondering if she will calm down given a few more days to settle in. What are experiences of this?

She will calm down - but is also using the other mare as her security blanket as everything is new.

Why was the other horse moved, and is yours now on it's own??

She has a new owner, new home, new routine and new horses.
Quite a lot to take in!.

It may help if you could keep her with 2 other horses, so there is less separation anxiety when one leaves a single one on it's own.

Don't expect too much of her at the moment, give her time to settle and just keep handling and stable time short and sweet, but always ensure she maintains her manners!
