New horse! (Subj to vetting) Sleepless night as too excited!!!

Might have found my next partner in crime, subject to vet...

He is perfect in every way but one. I particularly wanted a Cruising horse cos Catembi was by him, & this horse is a grandson of Cruising. The good points - totally huge jump, nice clean legs, very calm & not at all spooky which was Cat's one downfall, working well on the flat, good manners, I feel safe on him, has been produced by very kind & knowledgeable people...

Bad point - he's 17.2 and I'm 5 ft 1 1/2 and very petite... After I sold my 16.2 warmblood, we were looking for something smaller but ended up with Cat (sold as 16.3; actually 17 hh) cos I totally fell in love with him. I bought a big mounting block & we had a fantastic 4 1/2 partnership that was sadly cut short by his incurable illness. This time we were again looking for something 15.3 to 16.2 & I was really determined to get something smaller. This horse was advertised as 17 hh but he's def two inches bigger than Cat. I can only just reach enough of the saddle to get a leg up.

Although he's taller than Cat, he's got long legs but is a lot narrower round the barrel - Cat was very Irish Draught in build even tho he was actually TB x ID - so my legs come further down his sides.

So here he is...thanks to Patches for explaining how to use photobucket...

OMG he is huge. I prefer mine a bit nearer the ground.

I suppose you can't help who you fall in love with and if he is a nice boy and what you want then that is what really counts.

Looking forward to meeting him at local events.
 
YAY!!!! You worked it out! Easy when you know how eh?

He's MAHOOSIVE!!!!!! He's very lovely though, nice chap indeed. Personally I don't think people are "over horsed" just because they're little on a large horse. Some of the smallest cobs going can be stronger as they're so thick through the neck and jaw they just set themselves and they're off. It's all about the rider's ability.

If he's well schooled, has a nice trainable temperament and soft mouth, then I see no reason why someone smaller shouldn't ride something bigger. Unless you're buying a brute of a horse that's used to be ridden and contained by brawn, you'll be fine.

He's lovely. Good luck with the vet and can't wait to hear progress reports! Of course, the only problem you may have is the weight of carrying the oxygen tanks on your back whilst riding! Do you get nosebleeds and altitude sickness up there?

Oh bless him, he's a monster! But very lovely with it. I'm a titch too but love big horses....have always felt safer on something with abit of substance

He is lovely, I am the same height as you and have two 17hh t.b's. You cant always choose the height of horse, its the right horse that matters. You will be fine, and feel lovely and safe up there.
 
He's 5 rising 6, so quite gangly still. I think the bigger horses are later to get co ordinated.

To be completely fair to myself, the advert said he was 17 hh, ie the same as Cat, so when I first saw him looking out, I thought he must have one of those stables with a raised floor. Then I got in next to him & thought, OMG I've (or rather, long suffering o/h) just driven 200 miles to look at an elephant. Uh-oh.

But then I loved everything else about him - you know when you get on something & think, I could REALLY do something with this - so I'll just have to get an extension built onto my mounting block.

Not sure how I'm going to break it to my jumping & dr trainers that, having promised to buy something small & neat, I've ended up with one that makes Cat look like a shetland...

If that doesn't work, go on Horsemart, search for Cruising & he's the one jumping a spread. The one that looks like an elephant...
 
Oooh, he's lovely! I wouldn't worry about him being a bit big if he's wonderful (and he certainly seems to be!) in every other aspect! The opposite happened to me; I'm 5'8" and I really wanted something over 16.2..... I ended up with PF who's only 15.2!!

He's gorgeous and so well bred - Cruising and Touchdown (Liscalgot who Dermott Lennon won the World Equestrian games ind SJ on was by Touchdown and I know of alot of other horse by him and they all have great temperments!)!! If you feel comfortable on him then I wouldn't worry about his size. Good luck with the vetting.
