My new girl came today. She is amazingly chilled and relaxed.

Wondering when to ride - will be a short walk out as we have no school. I'm off work until Monday so the next few days would be a good time.

I usually ride same day it arrives (obviously if ridden animal ;) ).
Start as I mean to go on :)

Suggest tomorrow & make sure you have someone with you, doesn't need to be horsey at all, just a responsible adult who can use a phone & drive a car :) (that is NOT meant in a callous way, just being prudent) also poss hold a rein or off side stirrup whilst you are getting on etc.

Hope it goes well :)

I ride mine either the same day or the day after they arrive as I work on the idea that if they go to a show they will be ridden at a new place straight away so why not at home. I am not worried about getting on different horses though and adapt quickly to them whereas some people like to take longer. All down to the individual but whatever happens have fun :)

would be no harm to give her a lunge. if she's been out of work a while she might be a bit fresh getting under saddle again - at least on a lunge you can assess her a bit

When I got my new horse last year I took him out for a hack the following day. I no people who like to leave them a few days or so, but I prefer to just get on with it. Have fun :D

Aw - congrats, so exciting!

I took my new lad out the day after he arrived last month for a little hack as our school was being resurfaced and I wanted to start getting him into a routine. Guess it depends on both the horse and the rider as to how you feel but that first hack is going to happen at some time so if you're both happy personally I'd say why not this weekend!

Enjoy :)

She's been in regular work. She has been kept in 24/7 due to lack of grazing for the past few months - but now she's living out on a nice field. She'll be tired in the morning I reckon, so will probably take her out for a ride tomorro x

Firstly have fun with your new horse :) Secondly, if she were mine I'd ride her tomorrow, maybe lunge her first then go for a short ride, with someone on foot just in case. Let us know how it goes :)

Lucky you!
I rode mine the same day he arrived and my dad came out with me in his bike. We done the same the next day, then unfortunately we had all the snow so I couldn't ride for a week! We've started up again now and I hope the weather stays nice! Have fun! It's exciting isn't it! :)

I rode my new boy the day after he arrived. I lunged him first (really didn't need) and then rode in the school with my friend watching for moral support. Another livery came to watch and commented 'the done thing is to leave a horse to settle for a few day's cue my friend and I rolling our eyes at each other and my retort' there is the other argument of course of getting them into a routine quickly'. As my horse behaved perfectly there wasn't a lot she could say to that!

So give it a go and enjoy your new horse I say! X

I left Blondie for a week before I rode her. It was a new yard she was at and I wanted to give her time to adjust to the surroundings. Instead I went everyday to groom her and let her get used to me being there and not asking much of her, I then would take her in hand to different parts of the yard so she could have a nosey and just stand and take in the surroundings.

Blondie is quite a highly strung horse  though and felt this approach was best for her as an individual.

We rode today and my girl was a little star. My friend came with me on foot and we were out for a good 45 mins.

What a super pony I have bought :)

As she is so chilled and relaxed I would dive straight in.Some horses need a bit of time to adjust, but some are kind of born ready as it were. I took my girl out for a walk in hand 1 week into her arriving, it was with a ridden friend. I then took her out alone last weekend and she was very good considering

ETS: just seen you have in fact been and gone :) glad it went so well

I rode next day and on roads OH came with me just in case(busy roads) but no I expected horse to do his job and do what I wanted to do with him. Start as you mean to go on etc.

Good luck ...just get on with it.

If you take the horse to a show then you do not hang around for a few days to allow it to settle!

i never quite get that train of thought, surely most horses you take to a show you already know? very rare that you take an unknown horse to a show:confused:

not aimed at you BTW as a few others have said the same:) just yours was easier to quote lol:)

as for riding a new one, i do it whenever it feels right lol, and when the weather allows, picked up a new one on loan 2 weeks ago and it snowed the night we got him so he had a week off before we could get him out again!

With an animal that is established under saddle, we always ride them the same day or the day after arrival, although we usually turn them out first!
