New horse - worming advice needed!

Hi

I am getting a 14-3h gelding on full loan this Saturday, i know i will need to worm him when he arrives its just its been 5 years since i owned my own horse and i cant really remember what wormer to use at this time of year, could anyone please advise?

Find out what and if he's had before and when he had it. If he is in good health and not severely underweight I would give him Equest pramox. Also check if your yard has a plan in place as you will need at some point to slip into their system. I would also take a worm count before giving him a wormer - although do be aware counts WILL NOT show encysted small redworm or tapeworm - hence the Pramox.

Can I jump on the thread and ask if anyone has used the worming tablets? A friend has taken in a pony from a home where we think worming has been erratic. Said pony is a bit of a project and hard to catch at the moment, but will take treats by hand... I was wondering whether to give her a broad-based worming tablet to get her started while we work on catching and handling.

None of ours would eat them from the hand, they had to be crushed and added to feed. I would try 5 day guard if he will eat from a bucket, it would also be gentle enough to move anything slowly rather than a 'mass evacuation' if his worming has been erratic and give you a bit more time before using a more potent wormer.

Not at all, we just went back to gel and mix it in the feeds of the difficult ones. I am sure some must eat the tablets but we have greedy ponies that will normally grab anything out of your hand and they either wouldn't touch them or spat them straight out. Expensive way of finding out really!

IME the tablets arent worth the hassle! most of our lot ate the first 1 or 2 then wouldnt touch the rest.
I would use Panacur Equine Guard - which is the 5 day wormer in the feed as already suggested.
