I bought a new horse a few weeks ago. I have been doing a lot of flat work and riding around the fields just to get used to him and his reactions, so far he is been well behaved just a few moments with scarey pigeons in the trees!!

My horse is not used to being hacked out and never been on a road, thankfully there is off road hacking, I have been out on a couple of hacks, but due to work commitments I seem to be rarely about when others are.

What I wanted to know is, as he has not been hacked out before is it safer/wiser for him to be hacked out with other horses to get him used to it or just to crack on with solo??

I am not concerned about going out by myself.

yeah i have put it off due to the wind and rain. He's quite a safe horse on the whole but i want it to be right otherwise i'll lose his confidence!! i think i'll stick with building it up, no rush :)

Congratulations on getting your new horse! If you have the option of riding out with a well behaved companion, I would certainly go for that initially. You will feel more confident with another person there and so will your horse! If you have any problems, there is someone there to help you. You can practise riding behind and in front of the other horse and really get to know your new boy before you venture out alone
