Hi My first post but I am really at a loss and need some advice. I bought a beautiful Irish Cob 3 weeks ago. When he came he had quite bad diarrhea and was thinner then when I had viewed him. The sellers assured me he had had a bad journey and I was so desperate to sort him out I took their word for that. Turns out he was riddled with red worm :( He has now been treated with Equest Pramox and is due another Equest at the end of April. He has seen the vet who has started his vaccinations. It took about a week for the diarrhea to settle but today I have noticed he is making cowpats again. He is not himself at all - very sad and depressed. But he is eating absolutely fine and was trying to get grass from the verges on his way to his paddock!! He is on high fibre pony nuts, chaff and global herbs immunity mix - He has been on the global herbs for a week. He just doesnt seem to have any get up and go and I am quite worried i am missing something. Does anyone have any ideas please? Thank you

Sounds to me like a rapid change off food and the spring grass is upsetting his stomach, and so he's feeling a bit low in himself. Not an expert, but maybe give it another week to see if it is that :) After that, probably call out the vet to see if it's any other worm he may have, or a virus? :) hope you find out what's going on and have a good time owning him.

Congrats on the new horse btw :D

Hi, it's probably worth having another chat with your vet and getting a blood test done to rule out any further issues / viruses. Good luck, I hope your new boy is feeling himself again soon.

Hi Thank you for the replies :) The vet is actually due out the 2nd of April but obviously I will get him out sooner if needed. He is fully insured and everybody loves him - he is such a good natured boy. I just want him to be happy but like you have all said he has had an awful lot to deal with in a very short space of time.

Has the vet checked for liver disease?

Second the pink powder or natural yoghurt and high fibre diet. Fast fibre is really good. Don't use mollassed chaff xx

I'd put him on a 5 day to make sure also worm-wise and take out anything high protein/rich for him for the minute to calm his system down a bit.

Anything such as natural yoghurt etc too is always good we've found. If you can find any 'Thrive' anywhere in stock still, then I'd go for that each time as a supplement, though they've stopped doing it I think. A few places still have stocks though.

ETA - also check for lice, mites, etc. Dectomax him and wash him just to rule that out also, as could explain weight loss.
