Following on from my previous threads to horsey mums, I've done it! I've taken the plunge and bought a new horse ;) my beautiful welsh section d arrives on Saturday and I couldn't be more excited, the other half and my little fella seem to be taking it in their stride but are looking forward to helping out - bonus!

So, any welsh d owners out there - how do you find owning this breed? My particular young man is 3 yrs old and well handled but un spoilt, he's quite chunky and stands at 15.2hh

I will try and post some pics when he arrives

Congratulations. :D

Photos are a must. ;) :)

I've not owned a Sec D, but I've known/ridden a fair few and they were all fine to handle, but you had to train them properly (or they can get a bit bargy). One needed to have a simple rubber bit attached to her headcollar, but her owner was very small and the mare was very greedy (would drag the owner over to any patch off grass available without the bit). To ride, they are fun, forwardgoing, powerhouses and are pretty hot for cob types, infact every Welsh D that I have known was hotter than my grey arab, but you feel very secure on them and they are comfortable rides. :)

I love them and have had the pleasure of owning/loaning a few. But as said above you have to be the boss but in a calm and understanding way as some can be sensitive. They are great fun to ride forward going but safe and comfy. They are definatly the thoroughbred of the cob world and should never be confused with a gypsy cob type horse. Good luck and enjoy the best breed in the world. (in my opinion)

I have two and they are almost identical but polar opposites but lovely :D
Had Meg 7 years:

Nesta for 10 weeks tomorrow! :

I've had my sec D who I produced myself for a year and I would describe him as ; bolshy, intelligent, forward going (to say the least), hot headed and incredibly loving. Welsh D's are lovely, you just have to know how to handle them! Good luck with your new boy

I had one, nearly 16h, by Trevallion Ap Comet out of Pantogorian Eirlys. Bought him as a weanling and lost him at 28.

Mad as a box of frogs, jump anything, kind, genuine allways tried his best, totally sound all his life.

Good luck with yours.

Thanks for your replies guys. Its been 6 years since I owned my last horse (both warm bloods) but in the meantime have gained a husband a gorgeous baby boy (not so much a baby he's 2.5 now :-)) I've known and ridden a few d's and loved them all so I'm hoping my new boy will be just as fabulous.

Megibo your horse are beautiful, the new boy is bay also with 4 white socks

congratulations on buying a ''D'' mine is only 3, you have to let them know you are boss or they WILL take the mick, big time. other wise they are lovable rouges, I can hang off mines neck, for cuddles!

Buddy is half welsh D (x with gypsy vanner) and has his welshy moments, I love the streak in him and am seriously considering if I ever had time for two it'll be a nice big D!!
I think the D in him gives him character and his 'go', when he gets his blood up he may as well be a tb!! Which is something i've always found with these welsh types but they aren't silly with it. He is veeery level headed.
However manners, manners, manners!! With every horse is obv important but D's do tend to be bolshy i've found and need a reminder of who's in charge even if they are the most beautiful creature on the yard ;)

OP, that really is wonderful news, but you do realise nobody is going to believe you have a new horse without you posting pictures:rolleyes::rolleyes:;):D:D

love mine :D
i bought him last year as a project while my other horse was injured with the intention of keeping him a few months and selling him
he's still here :o he is no longer for sale ,he is the sweetest horse ive ever met ,he wraps me completely round his hooves with just one look ,he always gives me 100% in everything i ask him to do :)

this is he :p

Great news, looking forward to pics! I got mine as a 3yr old, he's now 9. He definitely fulfils the welsh d stereotype of being bolshy and sharp, along with bags of character, being gorgeous and is loads of fun! Agree with being very firm - I haven't been as firm as I should have been during his education (its the way he looks at me, I can't help it!) so he still pushes his boundaries, but I love him for it. Biggest personality on the yard!

Adorable Alice - my mare is by Trevallion Ap Comet! Diff dam though. Do you know much about this sire / breeding line? Have been trying to find out some info on this sire.

I wouldn't have anything else other than a section d, loads of fun, never boring, always safe! Lucky you having a youngster to bring on.

My second loan horse was welsh D x TB, he could be very bolshy, pig headed and totally nuts! Had a big buck on him...but god I loved that horse!! Was a massive confidence giver, my jumping progressed so much with him and I leant so much from him!!! I could put my mum on him and he would be an angle!! (Mums experience limits to donkeys rides on the beach when a child)
Wanted a welsh D when I bought my own and got TB instead but I love her to bits!!

I don't, but have a look at the website for The Tardebigge Welsh Cob Stud. I bought my lad off them when they were based in Worcestershire. Went to buy 100cwt of oats and came home with a foal !

The sire must be dead by now. My horse was 28 when I lost him and the stallion was at least 4 when the foal was born. I know the stud owners Mr and Mrs Abrey bought Pantorgorian Eirlys in foal to Trevallion Ap Comet in the hope she was carrying a filly. They wanted the blood line for their broodmare band. Unfortunately for them the mare had a huge colt. They are lovely people, now based in Wales, and I am sure if you emailed them they would be able to give you some info on the stallion. They are cob judges with a wealth of breeding and producing cobs.

I have an eleven year old gelding I bought just over five years ago, the most handsome horse I have known. No I am not biased even a friend of mine who does not like welshies thinks the same.:D He is not the easiest and has a very strong will of his own but he is such a gentle boy to handle from the ground. Also have a twenty year old homebred mare, sir TB, Dam a daughter of Nebo Black Magic. Love the Sect D's I am sure you will have lots of fun congratulations.

Angelish - sorry i was sure I also wrote how lovely your horse it, but it appears I didnt:o Therefore my question may have appeared rude, sorry! I only ask as Im toying with the idea of clipping mine out fully next time as we dont show.

Congratulations :) I have a 3 year old - he's sweet, gentle and quiet and so far I couldn't have wished for a nicer horse :D

I have a Tardebigge and she is A-mazing! Cheeky little cow bag at times but so loyal, loving, and very, very talented! She has beautiful manners, movements to die for, and makes me smile everyday without fail. :D

I have a Welsh D called Jay. I've had him for just over 4 months now and he's brilliant! He's my first horse and I am a novice and he sussed me out straight away! If he can get away with doing nothing he will! Or if he can get away with showing off and bucking when we go out for hacks with another gelding he will! But he is so lovely and very sweet natured and I have already learned a lot from him! We even did some jumping today which we both loved :)

I have a 6yo Welsh Dx TB his shire is Corronud Carradog who is 16hh. My boy is 17hh! How that happened I don't know! He has a huge heart, jumps the moon, beautiful paces, very trainable. But can be stubborn (we've had our Kevin moments), will take the p***. He's a senistive chap but once on side he looks after me very well :D jumping British novice, done BE80s, 65% avg dressage score... Can't really fault that!

Oh and like the OP I have a 2 year old daughter who's sat on him, brushed him and even attempted to help me pick his feet out. He's all very relaxed about it all and his good with all the child related noises too :)
