so purchased a new horse last Wednesday , tried him absolutely everything i wanted quiet nice mannered etc. hes been with me a week now enjoying being turned out everyday and in on a night, very chilled out, waiting for saddle to come on Tuesday. lunged him today and he was very excitable bucking and cantered round and round struggled to get him to slow down and eventually stop .. im worried now as to 1.why that was is it because its a new place.. feeling fresh but also worried as to how hes going to be when i get on him on tuesday as like i say when i got him he was quiet .. i asked his old owner who had been very open to me about some of his flaws with clipping etc but said hes not done that before am i just over thinking it lol also if anyone has any advice on slowing a horse down on the lunge please let me know
thank you

New yard, horse not worked, probably getting more food than before. Make it a rule to lunge or work him some way everyday to get that energy out. I know a lot of horses who go gaga on the lunge but are still perfectly quiet to ride. If you’re worried have someone with you when you get on.

Don’t forget everything for the horse that he is used to has changed. He is in a different place with a new owner and possibly in a different routine. Some horses settle very quickly and some take longer. Try as much as possible to keep some things the same as in his previous home such as routine for turnout and being stabled, feed etc. If he was used to being ridden daily his freshness is probably a combination of not being ridden for a week, being unsettled by his new environment and spring grass is just coming through. Is he used to be lunged and are you experienced at doing it?

Can you lunge/long rein with two lines? Or could you ask someone else to for you? I've always found that horses that are silly to lunge on one line tend to be fine with two lines running through a roller.
