new horses feet - advice please!

hi there - my new gorgeous boy is mine and i am totally besotted.

However his feet look a bit of a mess (see pic) is there any suplements that are any good or anything i can do - they just look crumbly.

Also is my bit ok or is it too high? Is that between a hole thing where it never looks right! thanks!

Glad he is with you - he looks gorgeous. As for his feet, the clenches already look risen, so they are likely to work loose and his feet will keep crumbling around them. A good farrier will make lots of difference. I found Forumla4Feet works really well, but you do need to persevere as it will be 8 months or so before you see really good new hoof. There are lots of topical dressings - Kevin Bacon hoof ointment, Keratex hoof hardener which I have used with great success, etc. If you have a good farrier, he will be able to advise you. He really is a lovely horse - so pleased for you after all you went through with the mare. Hope you have lots of fun with him.

A good look at those feet by your farrier is a good idea. I did a photo shoot cover of a whiteline case, and see some similarities.

Difficult to tell from the photos, though - your farrier will know straight away.
 
Bit looks fine.

I was recommended formula 4 feet by the HHO gang and I have to say it's really made a difference so I'm definitely a fan. Cheapest place I've found to get it is ebay by a seller called prequestrian. They deliver quickly too and cap the postage.
 
oh gawd isnt whiteline horrid? there hasnt been anything else wrong with him. hes just not had the full time care of one person recently so just needs some tlc. have got the kevin bacon and will do the formula for feet. will also get my farrier onto him, hes ace. those were only done last week.
 

Whiteline is manageable. The case I covered was jaw dropping: whiteline in all 4 feet, couldn't have shoes on, the horse could hardly move out of his box - and he got better.

Like most things, of course, the sooner you move on it the better.

And don't worry too much - we're only theorising at the moment.

It sounds like you've got a good plan of action in place, and that you 'll be taking real good care of him.
 
We have had one of ours on a hoof supplement for over a year and she now has super feet. previous to that she had massive cracks right down both feet and had remedial shoeing at great expense.
She was on formula for feet but is now on Saracen's stuff, can't think of it's name but it is a yellow powder and is working just as well but much less cost. We bought a huge tub and it doesn't seem to go down at all.
I'd ask your farrier what to put on the actual hooves, ours always puts something on but I have to admit to never asking him what it is!
 
Sorry not a total expert on White line but have done research in the past and white line is a clear separation between the wall and the sole caused by infection - not sure if you could really say its white line from the shot you have posted - although happy to be corrected.
Anyway what I am trying to say is don't worry

Imo he/she just needs a good farrier - his foot looks overgrown, clenchs our up and a good conditioning supplement should sort them out.

Don't panic - just get a farrier out and follow their advice.

Your plan of action is what I would have recommended and what I'm currently doing for my horse who has some crumbly edges growing out.

Formula 4 Feet, and every morning before she is turned out I paint her hooves with Kevin Bacon - the one in a tin with a brush in the lid. This was recommended to me by the farrier.

I also took the step of changing farrier and the new one changed from a toe clip to quarter clips on the fronts, which has been brilliant at stabilising the foot. You farrier might consider that as an option.

I think you'll soon sort those feet out. I've seen a lot worse.
 
hes just gorgeous - i love him to bits already, sad hey!!! my oh took the day off and we put the sprog in nursey and we took it in turns to ride him over the common and pic nicked, was v cool! did you recognise the feet?!!!!!! think he needs a bit of tlc.
 
in all fairness he has always had bad feet - we had the same farrier and mine never lost a shoe -(all 3 horses that is!) and Aj would lose one at least every other set - they cut him down to 5 weeks to get on top of it but as soon as his feet get dry they crack and he pulls shoes.

loads of kevin bacon supplement and the use the hoof grease too.
 
oh yes i know that, i didnt think it was because they werent looking after him!i can see how much he is loved! im doing the kevin bacon thing and will get the supplement today. just look so wierd compared to my tiny tb's feet!
 
i know but you and i both know who has been looking after him and as much as she is a sweety she isnt as knowledgable as the daughter.

i also am very shocked that his feet were only done last week???
do you know which farrier as i really dont think my farrier would have left him like that - unless she has changed farriers.
