Hi everyone, Elmo is my first horse but today I had a huge confidence knock as I went for a trot on her and she went straight into a gallop before throwing me over her head into a pile of dung. She hadn't been in work for a couple of weeks as we were getting her tack together. She also has a VERY fast trot which makes me nervous this is because she used to be a driving horse and I am terrified of our first canter being a gallop. sorry for the rant 😁 Does anyone have any experience with anything similar? 😀

Have you got an instructor? I really think that some regular lessons with a good instructor would help both you and Elmo.

PS. welcome to the forum. :)

Has she actually been ridden properly before you bought her or did you buy her from the home where she was driven?
You both need a good instructor to help you, she requires some proper schooling to learn how to trot at a steady speed, to get the basics in place so you can start to enjoy her, for now stay in walk, do lots of transitions to halt then walk on, repeat until she is really listening to you and only move on to trot when you feel ready then do the same, a few strides of trot then a few strides of walk, halt, walk, trot a few strides, never let her get into a fast trot, use circles to help keep her listening and don't think about cantering until the trot, walk transition is reliable and the trot is very steady.

Thank you everyone, I have had a few lessons on her but she can still be a tad naughty as she just wants to have fun. She only tends to be a pain near trees though ( maybe because of the flies?) Do you know of anything which I can put on her so she stops being a pain ? Thank you in advance
