My new girl will be arriving later today, cue butterflys in belly etc!
I was looking for advice on which insurance companies people recommend at the moment. I know there are quite a few out there but would to whittle it down a bit and then spend a day on the phone... :(

Hopefully she settles in well tonight then can start afresh tomorrow with turn out and a short ride...ohh excited!! :D

I am hopeless with that kind of thing but my dad is good with it and we are on petplan :)

Well my boys is insured with PetPlan, he has recently been very ill but with the insurance of £5K we could stop him being PTS. Petplan paid out and have been very, very good. They even paid for the secondary vet check 2 weeks later to make sure he was okay. :)

Petplan are well respected so a good choice and they also gave me a free Horseware jacket worth £60 when I joined, at the moment they have a draw to win a lesson with William F-P which you are entered into when you join but make sure that when getting the insurance, you tell the person on the other end about the prize, otherwise it won't come

I use KBIS at the moment as they will insure up to £7.5k vet fees for colic and I'd heard v good things. I have also used Julie Andrews who is a broker and she to me a good deal until I moved to KBIS.

I am with Lycetts who also do the emergency life saving surgery cover.

They are very professional, very knowledgeable, cover can be in place automatically, the only need a Health Questonnaire filled in for any horse under 10K. Not the cheapest but cover and service is very good.

I work at a vets and almost all vets and referral centres will insist on you paying for treatment at the time it is given if you are insured with;

E & L
entertainment and leisure
equine and livestock

the above are all the same company, they do you other names too so be careful, they delay payout by upto 8 months if they pay at all.
avoid them at all cost
as a small and equine practice we have least payout problems with petplan
hope that helps
worth asking the vet you intend using for your horse who they would suggest

Agree with poster above I am insured with Petplan (who have been fantastic throughout) and a few years ago I moved vets as the new vets was over the road from my livery yard and I could walk my horses over there for jabs, teeth etc and no call out.

So my horse had some lameness issues, the total was going to cost around £1600 so I rang insurance to check I was insured for this kind of thing....no problem they said. Had all the treatment done went to pick horse up from vets, had forms from petplan for vet to sign buttttt.....this vets takes the payment from you and the expect insurance company to reimburse you. Which I totally was not expecting. Luckily I was able to get the money to pay the vets and petplan reimbursed me but really you have insurance to not have to worry about that sort of thing. I don't know how common this is, my vet's is only one I've heard of doing it but there's only a few vets in my area so I dont have much to go on!

So long story cut short.....check the vet you are with is willing to get money directly from insurance company.

greenbury it is becoming more common with all animal insurance as in the current financial climate vets dont want to be out of pocket-but most will deal direct with petplan

Another vote for KBIS - we had a lurgy that affected pretty much the whole yard recently, and mine was one of the first claims to get paid out (various insurance companies used on the yard). Been using them for years, always been happy with them. Good luck with new horse :-)
