I thought that the cover took place as soon as you accepted it. I know that if the horse developed something like strangles within their set period 14-20 days (they all seem to vary), that this would not be covered, but if the horse was kicked or suffered an accident then that would be.

Does anyone know differently? Sods law that the insurance was taken out the day before the horse was kicked but the company are stating it is not covered for the 1st 20 days. My insurance company though state that their policy covers external accidents. I suppose this goes to show how closely you need to read your policies.

Most insurance companies state that when a new policy starts cover is restricted to losses arising from an accidental external injury for the first 14 days, so if the horse got kicked in the field when you first got it home or indeed had an accident in the lorry on the way back from collection it should be covered provided that cover has been activated.

Illness and disease is not covered in the first 14 days. This protects the insurance company from claims being made for lameness that could have been masked by drugs.

Hope this helps.
