New JRT pup - tips needed for housetraining/leaving at night!!

Hi guys - long time no speak etc etc, but OH and I have a new pup and I would love you to tell me we are on the right track with her.....

13 week old JRT female pup. Have had her exactly one week (got her at 12 weeks from breeder - lived with other JRTs mum, sister, granddad etc)..

Firstly housetraining....not sure any attempt had been made to HT her before we got her (though she did live inside rather than out) so unfortunately have started slightly late at 12 weeks. Taking her out every time she wakes up or every 2-3 hours (whichever comes first) is working OK at the mo though have had a couple of mistakes. Unfortunately have had 6" snow here on Thursday night, so she now much prefers to do her business in the front part of the hayshed on some loose hay rather than outside even though have scraped with shovel the area where she normally went. I know this is not ideal, but she will stand for 10-15 min hunched up and shivering outside and not do anything, and then pee and poo immed as soon as we go into shed. Is this OK in the circumstances, as long as we review the situation as soon as the snow goes?????

Secondly, she sleeps in a crate in the kitchen at night (nice big one, beside radiator, cats in same room for company etc), but gurns/whimpers quite loudly for 5-10 min when put to bed (with supper, any time from 11.30 to 1am) and last night continued for longer about 20-25 min. We don't shout through to her or get up to her, and are trying the ignoring tactic..... but I was really tired last night and ended up awake for about an hour and a half listening to her and then not able to get back to sleep..... Apart from earplugs/cotton wool (for me and OH) is there anything else we can try. Only suggestion so far has been clothing (of ours) placed in her bed with our scent on it (will try a pair of OH's worn socks tonight). Any other tips....

Although not at our wits end (yet), she hasn't settled as well as our last JRT (who in hindsight was pretty perfect), and I would lust love to know if we are doing anything wrong...

Ticking clock in her bed and smallest crate possible for her size. Cover crate with blanket so it's blacked out. Another puppy for company (joke!) and carry on with what you're doing.

I shall be very upset if we don't get pictures.

As above, smallest crate poss, the crate should not be too big (that is crucial for toilet training and for security as in making her feel secure, she must be placed in the crate for periods during the day too, not just on a night, she needs a teddy bear sibling about her size to snuggle, heat pad, thick blanket, crate covered.

Also I would make her last meal no later than 6pm, to help her hold over night, and def cover the crate if cats are in, as A, as much as they are company, they could possibly disturb and wake her when they move around , so I would cover crate with thick blanket so she cannot see cats move or hear them move around so well and she cannot see light break in the morning, u need to make basically a sound/light proof den.
Also try sprinkling some of the hay where u want her to go, i.e garden instead of shed, see if u encourage her to go in the designated area, otherwise that may be hard to break.

I have a JRT pup - she is now 12 weeks, we got her at 7 weeks.
She is in a small crate at night. We have attatched a block of wood so the crate is split in 2 - the back is big enough for her to curl up and sleep and the front loned with newspaper. She loves it and sleeps all night

Thank you soo much - all great advice, and am pleased to report that she has been completely quiet now for four nights which is brill, and clean in the house for two days (only 1 mistake per day before that). She is settling in really well, travelling in the small travelling basket in the car, and getting more used (even with the -10 temperatures) to doing her business in strange places.

She is dying to play with dad's lab, but she is scared of her the big wuss. Can't wait until the snow goes and we get to go for proper walks and give her a reall good run about.

Sorry no pics yet, as they download onto my laptop and I'm using hubby's work one at the moment.

Will promise to do a really long 'meet freckles' post with loads of pics as soon as I get the chance after Xmas.
