ok on a happy yard some ups and downs as always been there six months small yard all happy
new horse arrives coughs and discharge really snotty gunky
it was known horse was ill before she arrived
four weeks on my horse gets it and filly is fine !
im getting aggro off y/o i have got vet out straight away new livery didnt, but hes great pals with y/o its really unfair have any of you had this ?Y/O felt sorry for bloke as has no cash for vet !!Im having vet out second time as gotten worse now and hes complained saying my ned should be in isoloation !And yo agreed !My horse not as bad as the filly ! sO UNFAIR IM MOVING WHEN NEDS BETTER

Yeah have had it, one rule for one, one rule for rest.
I moved yards, and am now at a great yard where the same rule applies to all !!

Have you talked to YO about double standards? Its possible they just cant see it and it needs pointing out?
May be worth talking about before you go to move yards, depends on your horse really, mine move ok and are at home within a week, but other horses really hate moving and find it incredibly stressful xxxx

you nailed it in your post missyme,i am moving horse as soon as hes better , i wouldnt dream of going on a new yard infecting another horse im a good livery, pay every week on time quiet horse .Wondering how i can claim vets fees back from livery yard owner

they isolated him by putting him in a fifteen acre field byhimself the others are in the next field to him , i said viruses are airborne !Or have i missed something ?

I have been on a yard where the rules seem to be selective, as others say, it should be the same for all, maybe withhold your last payment to go towards your vets fee's when you leave.

whenever a new horse comes to our place we put it in quarantine for a week until we are 200% sure they can go with the other horses, It's never let us down so far.
What a bummer!
I think you should move your horse and forward the vet bill to the Y/O or the owner himself.
Good Luck
I hope your horse gets better soon and that you are able to find him a new home! :)

I know I'm disagreeing with others here and I really do sympathise for your position. But horses get viruses. There isn't much you can do about it.

You don't say why the filly had to come on yard whilst unwell. There might have been a reason you don't know about.

You also don't say how you know the virus is the same in your horse as in the filly. Most viruses incubate in 7 to 14 days - it looks like your ned got this 4 weeks later which is long after the normal incubation period. Unless you somehow have a definiative diagnosis from both the filly and your lad then you can't be sure it is in fact the same thing. A cough and a snotty nose could be a vast number of things, including not a virus at all.

Horses get viruses. Our lad came down with something really nasty this spring. When the vet came out he said he had seen 10 horses with the same thing - all on different yards. The only commonality was we had all hunted with the same pack on the same day. We'd obviously all picked up something. It is just one of those things I'm afraid.

I'm not saying you shouldn't move - that is entirely your choice. You might want to talk, either to this YO or the new one, about isolation proceedures for new arrivals as well as sick ones. I suspect you'll find most yards don't properly isolate new arrivals for the reccommended 7 days.

Totally sympathise with you!

I was on a mixed yard who two people went out with their horses to a show and then brought the strep virus back on the yard! As they were all a bunch of busy bodies and too busy drinking tea and stirring their cauldron as well it was summer and they all stupidly went and bought their horses benylin to treat their horses 'summer cough'

As my two were on hemp bedding and on haylage I knew as soon as a dry cough appeared I needed the vet-vet blood tested and confirmed it was the strep virus. They had a course of Antibs and luckily got over it.

I took the YO aside and told them that the rest of the yard had infected by horses. Right at the beginning.

After I left due to other stirring the cauldron 'they' tried to charge me for disinfecting my stables out due to the strep virus!

Believe me I had GREAT pleasure writing back telling them that any charges should be applied to those who brought the virus on the yard in the first place and that if any furhter communication happened that I would be more than happy to engage an equine solicitor and get all my costs reimbursed including having to leave!

Needless to say I have never heard back!

When you can safely leave do so and find the yard that has strict policies and not one rule for one and one for another!

They are hard to find but smaller yards are better!!!!!!
