Hi!! Im moving to my new property in 10 weeks. And im wanting to start a livery business, aswell as producing. Im just wondering if there is any more info i should know? Its the 1st livery business i will have run etc, i have done some studying and got a good idea of what i want and how im going to run it. If any of you are livery clients, how would you like your YO to be? etc Thanks

well the nuts and bolts questions you should be asking are whether the land is currently registered with the local authority for business use, or whether you currently only have permission to keep your own horses there.
If you have resolved this then you need to decide how many stables you want to make available to clients, how much storage each client will need (for rugs/tack/trailer/lorry/bedding/feed) and then see how much room is left after that for additional services.
As for how a YO should be, professional, knowledgeable and able to handle any horse on the yard would be my top requirements, the rest is down to personal style

Phone the BHS. They do a pack of info for people who are thinking of starting a livery. It includes a draft livery contact and welfare guide, insurance implications and a guide to standards of housing and maintainance... everything realy. It is designed for people aiming to have a BHS registerd yard. Even if you are not aiming for your yard to be te poshest of the posh, it is still handy so you can see what standards to aim for.
