sorry, bit of a rant. this mare is 7, had 2 owners since being in training, and i'm pretty damn sure she's had at least a few appointments with the dentist in her life. well, her front molars proved it, and her lack of wolf teeth, definitely had some work done.
So, WHY did she have a very back molar sticking up at least half an inch, forcing her whole jaw upper jaw forward and sideways, all the time? with the gag on and a torch, it was SO obvious. i exclaimed "that's NEVER been done, has it?" to which my (brilliant, brilliant) dentist replied grimly "No." it is bad enough that it has actually made her wear her incisors down at an angle the whole way across...

this poor mare has been going fairly sweetly on the flat, but last rider was hacking her out in draw reins, presumably because of the fairly dramatic head-tossing, running through the bridle at times, and difficulty getting her on the bit.
NO FLIPPING WONDER, THE POOR BEAST.
sorry for ranting, but it just shows how bad it can be, even when someone has in good faith paid an "expert" to do their horse's teeth.
now i am SO glad that i haven't put any pressure on her for the month i've been waiting for the dentist to get to me. i am just SO angry that these cowboy dentist do half a job, or even less than that, cheerfully take their money and go, leaving the poor horse with no more excuses and the poor rider with a false picture, that the mouth is fine, when it quite clearly isn't. GGGRRRRRRRRrrrrrr.
*tries to calm down*

Think you are very much deserved to rant! The mare my friend bought last month had got to the age of 12 with the most horrendus teeth, dentist was convinced no one had ever bothered to do anything, poor girl never complained, but felt so much better once it was all sorted

My god that is awful poor mare. Just goes to show you can't trust people even if they say they 'qualified' 'trained' etc.
Hope she is a lot more comfortable now poor girly.
My dentist lets me have a good poke and look in my horse's mouths as he goes along, showing me sharp bits and then them smooth etc, I'm no teeth expert but I can see/feel the difference and it makes me confident that he is doing a good job.

Funnily enough my dentist often comments on how short some dentist's arms must be, judging by the lack of work done to the back teeth.

poor katy:(
who do you have out of interest?
hopefully now she will be much happier:) any lcuk with a saddle yet?

i have Dean Andrews, trust him implicitly. just wish he could have got here sooner!
yep, saddle's sorted... her sore back is improving, took a couple of my Barrie Swaine dr and jump saddles with her wither pattern to his place in Walsall and got the trees altered and flocking redone, totally wonderful fit, happy horsey. serves me right for wanting to try something else. silly me.

aww yes, as soon as her poor mouth's settled down. she's had 3 weeks in a myler mullen mouth, with virtually no contact, learning to trust my hands and my intentions, and we're getting there...

first little comp next weekend, teensy dressage. quite excited actually...

Don't appolgise for ranting, it's understandable

In all honesty back then I didn't trust equine dentists so had my old vet 'do' my mares teeth once a year(for 10 years) at the annual vax visit.
Fast forward to this year when I moved and a very well respected EDT came over to do the yards here.
I was convinced she'd be a quick rasp WRONG
frown.gif
, it took well over an hour . She had very long spurs at the back and ulcerated cheeks.
You can imagine how I felt, as guilty as sin and so angry that I'd placed my trust in the vet, he always said' No problems'
mad.gif
.
Her EDT was ever so good, he 'makes' you put your hand in their mouth for a feel

Glad your EDT is helping her

Your poor mare! When I got my young mare in Jan she was 6 and had never seen a dentist or even had her teeth rasped by a vet. She was broken in using a straight bar pelham and draw reins
crazy.gif
. I tried for ages to get my usual dentist, who's very good but extremely hard to get hold of. After a month of leaving messages I eventually got another dentist. He did a good job on her teeth, which were very sharp, but the next day when I rode her (dentist had said it was ok to work her) she was head tossing wore than ever. I examined her mouth and the bars, roof and bottom of her mouth were black and blue and extremely sore to touch they were so bruised.

He must've given them a right whacking when he was rasping her teeth.
mad.gif
She had the gag on the whole time and stood perfectly quietly so I don't know why her mouth got so badly bruised.

You're lucky, your dentist sounds brilliant. I'm not sure what to do when I next need a dentist. I don't want to use this guy again after the state of her mouth but the other one is so unreliable and hard to get. There's not a huge choice of dentists over here.

I think I might have to, I really don't want to use the other guy again! Problem is I'll leave 100 messages and texts and then get a text saying he'll be there in an hour!!
crazy.gif
That's ok if I'm around but if I'm not then it's back to square one and won't hear back from him for another few months!! Also as my mare needed to be done quite badly and I could see they were starting to cut her cheeks, my mum also tried to ring him but then got annoyed and left him some very snotty messages.

I'll have to ring under an alias!

tell me about it! you put your trust in these so called professional people only to find that in actual fact they are from professional and cause pain to your horse to boot
mad.gif
Do they not realise they are dealing with a living breathing animal and not a machine?
Sorry this does make me mad and I wish that there was some governing body where you could go to for recommendations and the people registered were regulary checked or tested, same for Dentists, Back People, Farriers and Saddlers
grin.gif

totally agree, Pidge. sometimes, after decades of horses, i think that some of the best things that i know i've got are a back person, a trainer, a dentist, a saddler and a vet who i can trust implicitly...! at least now i can absolutely trust the feedback i get from a horse, i know whatever it does is down to my riding, the circumstances, or its past history, not a load of additional crap i had no idea was there... hope you know what i mean!
