The post and rail is being completed on my new menage this week, lucky me

I am still concerned that the edges are really deep to ride. Company have told me to "work" the surface before the fibre topping is laid

Now, I am not sure if I am being stupid, but does he mean harrow rather than ride the horses on it?

think that probably means ride but not sure.

New menages are notoriously deep to ride in before they settle, and they settle by being ridden in.

lucky you bet you can't wait for it to be up and running

It is taking far to long for my liking

they took the old menage apart in May and I have been waiting since August for the post and rail.

Fingers crossed he will be finished this week, just in time for more snow!!!

Maybe in 2010 the topping will be delivered to finish the whole project.

I CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER!!!!!

Can you not give them a call and ask them what they mean? How long has the surface been down? What kind of surface is it and how much water has it had on it?

My sand took six weeks in the middle of winter (so plenty of rain) to settle down, during which time it was too deep to ride on. At the end of the six weeks they came back to roll it, all the water came to the surface, 48 hours later it had drained and it was ready to ride on (that's when we added the rubber). It was very frustrating having to wait, but riding on a deep surface can cause all sorts of problems.

I rode on our surface straight away - a sand and fibre and rubber mix and it was perfect. The contractors had laid it, power-harrowed and rolled it pretty extensively but it 'bedded' in and has been fantastic since (2003)

The sand has been down since august, but was too deep and without the fence to dangerous as it is next to the lake! I will ask again when they come in the new year.

brightinsel - what kind of fibre do you have on your sand?

When my arena went down I was told NOT to ride on it until for three weeks and that it should be rained on heavily first to prolong use. Anyway we were so lucky that it poured that summer (2008) and it bedded it great. How he described knowing when it was ready i.e. had enough rain was move away the rubber and stick your finger in it - he said you should only be able to put your finger tip in and not easily (sorry for laymans terms but that's exactly how he described it - when it's firm enough you know it's ready). We have never looked back - was hell waiting for three weeks I have to say. I compare it to my friend who rode on hers right away, had no rain and to this day it's like riding at the beach where as mine is solid.
