Hi... I've been lucky enough to get some land and stables for my neddy. I also have planning permssion for a menage??? Question is who would you recommend to build it. I've been told it should cost between 10 and 15 K but the only quote I've had so far is way over that. Whilst I want a good one I just don't have that kind of money. Who have ytou guys used - I'm based in Derbyshire

Hmm, I think you're looking more at £20k to be honest. With the price of fuel, the cost of transporting materials like drainage stone and the surface is actually more than the materials themselves.

You might just be able to build one yourself for £15k but there's no point skimping on things like drainage or your money will be wasted. The cost will also depend on how much levelling you need to do and what sort of soil you're on.

I agree - plan on spending more like £20-25K. I'm in Derbyshire and had mine put in by Paul Boulton. Its been in 3 years now and not had any issues - drains and rides really well

I think for a decent one, with proper drainage etc you will be looking at nearer £20K.

I used New Forest Equestrain Services - they did a fantastic job, and I know they work all over the country so may be worth giving Steve a call.

You might get away with your budget is you have a wood chip surface although I wouldn't recommend this surface as I find it can get very slippery and does break down and need replacing quite quickly.

If you are not planning on doing any of the work yourself it is worth getting a reputable experienced company to do it for you. Drainage and quality sand is imperative.

When I was looking to put in an arena the one name that got mentioned again and again was Charles Britton. In the end we didn't put the arena in as we thought we might be moving. I used Keith at KHL arenas to resurface out existing school and he did a good job.

Whatever you do make sure you go and look as some arenas that your contracter has installed or at the very least speak to some of their customers. Obviously they will only supply reference sites for customers who were pleased with their work but it will give you a good idea.

I'm afraid that you get what you pay for and often going cheap in the first place ends up costing you more in the long run.

It might be worth going for a smaller arena - with the option to extend when finances permit - if you are very restricted with your budget.
