Beau arrives next week so I'm off shopping on Saturday :)
I'm taking a checklist with me.
Have I forgotten anything?

- LW stable and t/o
- MW stable and t/o
- HW stable and t/o
- waterproof exercise sheet

- Travel boots
- Tail guard
- Tendon boots
- Fetlock boots
- Turnout boots

- Headcollar and leadrope

- Grooming kit

- Bridle (and reins)
- D-ring snaffle
- Dutch gag (roundings?)

- Numnah(s)
- Stirrup irons
- Stirrup leathers

- Naff citronella tags
- Relax Me calmer

I have:
- feed buckets
- hay net(s)
- fly mask

Jelly babies on offer because I'm being naughty :D
 
Wow - that's a comprehensive list. A much more spoilt ned than any of mine!

Things that might be needed that I thought of were:

Cooler
Fleece
Over-reach boots - not sure if they're needed though

oh, and depending on what colous they are...
shampoo

I think we're going for thermatex rugs for ours. My dad keeps moaning about fleeces being a nightmare to wash :rolleyes:
I shall add OR boots to my list :) I can always keep them as spares for Dad's horse. :)

He's ginger so no biggie :D He can share shampoo with mr. break-out-in-hives-because-of-baby-shampoo :cool:
 
Wouldn't waste your money on stable rugs. Buy outdoor rugs instead as they are all breathable now so are suitable for indoor and outside. Outdoor rugs also don't soak up the wet and therefore don't need cleaning as much.
Trust me, you won't regret it and your horse will be cleaner.

Also, don't be too proud to get second hand stuff. It will save you a fortune and there are loads of horse owners out there who just have too much stuff they can't wait to get rid of.

Don't mind me though, I'm just green with envy cos I'd love to go shopping for all that stuff for my two! Have fun! :)
 
More than 1 lead rope and more numnahs. I also keep a lead rope permanently in the horse box tied up so I can clip it on immediately when I lead him in.

Have you mucking out things? You dont mention any on the list.

I would also have 2 hay nets, fill both in the morning (or evening) so you have one in stable and one ready for evening (or morning) as you will be in a hurry one of those times. Do you need a seperate one for traveling?

A scoop for feed.

*mutters* Daddy's credit card might be making an appearance :o

Horse isn't coming with tack or rugs so I need to basically need to buy him everything. He probably won't need turnout boots - I'm just overcautious because my oldie sliced through his neoprene boot AND his leg :cool:

That's a good point about t/o rugs, thanks :) My dad will love you for that :D

On a separate note, I'm thinking of cross tying my oldie to see if it helps him balance in the lorry. Anyone noticed a difference?

Being ultra boring, and having rushed out myself this time last year and bought everything, I'd recommend not buying all your rugs at once until you know what make will fit him - I'd start with a LW turnout / rainsheet and take it from there!

If you're watching pennies, you can double up as well - I agree that you don't need to bother with stable rugs, but if you do buy them you could always cut down by layering a LW and MW for more warmth, or use a stable rug under a LW rainsheet to create a MW / HW for turnout ...

I'd definitely add something like a waffle rug, and definitely a spare headcollar and leadrope.
 
I've been naughty and bought him a cute fly veil with a blingy star on it :o

I forgot to add a girth to my list - will wait until he's measured for a saddle. :)
I might take the sprenger irons off my other horse's saddle and replace them with some lightweight ones for everyday pootling around.

I'm hoping for a nice embroidered show rug for him when we start going to shows :) even if it's just a cotton sheet with a fancy braid and his name on it :o

so.. spare headcollar and leadrope for each horse has been added :)
anyone else think of anything I've missed?
 
My list is pretty much the same but I have also got
Snuggy hoods
Everyday and comp boots
Summer sheet

I personally have seperate stable rugs as like them to be in clean rugs when they come in :)
 
comp boots im not buying at the moment due to BSJ's new boot rule for second rounds.

I haven't found a pair of fetlock boots without elastic that go on the inside of the leg :cool:
 
Is the calmer for you or the horse LOL. You sound so excited and rightly so. I can't think of anything you have left out except I would get 2 leadropes, and perhaps one of the crystal type salt licks, and of course some herbal treats. (although I don't usually treat unless they have earned it) but just to welcome the new horsey would be nice. Numnah or saddle cloth, did you have on your list? Oh and a bottle of wine for the evening he arrives to celebrate.
Oops see you had numnahs on your list, can't have to many of them.

I wouldn't bother with all those rugs - I think for turnout rugs then you'll only really need two weights, ie lightweight then clip and use a heavyweight. If you aren't clipping then lightweight and then move onto a mediumweight. Likewise for stable rugs - if you are planning on clipping then you'll be fine with just a lightweight and then a heavyweight, if you aren't then a lightweight and mediumweight will be fine. Personally I never use a cooler and haven't needed one in over ten years. Other than that I think you have everything covered - though I wouldn't use turnout boots as they can overheat legs. Have you insured your newbie yet? Remember they're excluded from illness for the first 14 days of insurance so I always try and insure mine before they even arrive at my place!

I need to do some work with him like standing at the mounting block and not moving off etc :)
the licks are a good idea for when he's boxed - on the list they go.

re turnout boots - I'm paranoid. one of my horses managed to get caught in the fence when he was out (the horse he was out with went through the fence) and sliced through his boot and his leg. I dread to think what it would have been like if he hadn't had his boots on.
 
I would hold off on the bits unless old owners have told you what he is good in. Maybe also bridle until you have saddle and know which is his colour :)
 
Ask your riding instructor if you can borrow a dutch gag from her before your dad shells out for one. If it doesn't suit it'll sit in a drawer for the next 20 years.

I'm not sure why you'd need x-rays? I never have for any of mine - I can only think that you're going to be insuring him for a lot of money? In that case I'd call the insurance company and check - its always nice to have them insured for the journey home and incase they do manage to pop up with a nasty disease that insurance decides it doesn't want to cover as its before the 14 day cut off point!
 
I didn't buy very much at all for my new horse, and I didn't have anything that would fit him either since the horse I already had (have) is twice his size.. now I have a 17hher and a 15hher!!

The seller let me borrow a bridle so I could ride straight away, am using a saddle I already have. I just bought him a fleece and a LW turnout. He's a Connie type so hopefully should be pretty hardy and won't need loads of rugs. I need to buy him a cotton sheet and a TO with some sort of fill, probably a 70 or 100g, and I'll buy him a MW later on too. I can count on one hand the number of times my big horse has had his HW (360g) TO on so I won't be bothering with one of those. I'd rather just put the filled LW under the MW if it gets really cold. He'll also need a travel rug. I never boot to travel so didn't bother with those and am not using tendon or brushing boots.

Make sure you get insurance. Not sure why you'll need x-rays though - are you insuring him for loads of money? I would have thought x-rays would have been done as part of your 5 stage vetting if so (and if I was spending enough money on a horse for my insurer to request x-rays then I'd have definitely had a 5 stage vetting!!).

I thought that some companies asked for x-rays etc if you wanted to insure over a certain amount.
from an insurance website: A purchasers vets certificate is required for horses valued £3,000 or over and if £10,000 or over x-rays of the knees, hocks and front feet are required.
He was vetted at 5* before we bought him and we'll be getting our vet to give him a once over when he arrives :) I believe he needs his teeth done but that's easily sorted.

I need to sort insurance for my dad's horse as well so that's been added to my list.
