New Pony, Lice, Wormers and other advice

Stupidly I have committed to taking on a small pony, which has been standing knee deep in mud not being fed!!!

To boot, it hasn't been handled very much and so there is a limit to how intrusive I can initially be with any procedures.

Oh, and it has lice!! (Well, bare patches which look like lice).

I have sent off for a worm count - if I worm it will that kill the lice? and if so which products do I need to look for in the wormer.

And, if not, I don't think I could either clip or shampoo at the moment, so are there any powders I can put on (ears to tail?) and what active ingredients do I need to look for.

So sorry to have so many questions in one thread, but any help gratefully received!!

If you do not know his/her worming history then you should use Panacur 5 day Guard initially to avoid a mass expulsion and possible colic attack. Deosect is very good for lice and can be sponged on after dilution (I am assuming a spray is out of the question). I believe one of the main wormer ingredients works against lice, Ivermectin I think, but I really wouldn't risk using that for a few more weeks unless you know the history.

Ivermectin is effective against sucking lice but pony may have biting lice instead. Coopers fly repellent plus is very good at killing lice (both kinds) and is sponged on rather than sprayed. My filly was absolutely riddled but it killed them off very effectively. You need two applications a week and a half apart due to the life cycle of the little so and sos but that should pretty much get 'em.
