I was reading a newsletter from the vets and it advertised Domosedan in paste form, I have only come across this product used IV and mixed with Torbagisic. Has anyone used it and does it have better results than sedalin paste, just curious, it would save people alot of money on call outs to have horses IV injected.
 
Not tried it personally but it ought to be more effective than ACP - detomidine is a much more reliable sedative than acepromazine.

However, don't expect it to be as good as intravenous dom and torb - as a good bit of your sedation comes from the torb.

Also, it needs to be given under the tongue, it is designed to be absorbed across the oral mucous membranes rather than swallowed like sedalin. I did hear of someone complaining it didn't work, but it transpired that they had given it like a wormer, for the horse to swallow.

Like sedalin it will work best if you give the gel, then leave the horse in peace for a while to let the drug take full effect, before you start clipping etc.
 
I have used it, just last week, and it was excellent.

As lauraandjack says, it needs to be given under the tongue, which I was concerned might be tricky, but was actually fairly easy - the first time at least! I used it on a pony for a particular procedure which HAD to happen on one day, so we did a trial run the day before. Pony was a little less easy to dose the second time, as knew what was coming.

They do need to be kept nice & quiet, while it takes effect. And it does take about 30 minutes to take effect. They start to show signs about 12 - 13 minutes after being dosed, but reach peak of effect after 30 minutes. It takes a fair while to wear off, took our pony over 2 hours. Other than taking longer to take effect & longer to wear off, it seems pretty close to the injectible. It is nothing like sedalin - it is much more reliable - if you dose correctly, it works every time. And it has a much stronger effect.

It's great stuff, and I can see it will be very useful in the future - for example I'm having a few ponies freezemarked soon, and intend to use it for that. But. It does need to be used with great care - the instructions advise wearing rubber gloves, and you have to be ultra careful with pets / children around, in case any drops to the floor. I'm not sure it's something that vets are going to hand out freely to everyone - and nor should they.

I think the one tube cost us just under £30, and that was only enough to dose one pony weighing up to 250kg twice, and leave .5mg over. So it may not always work out cheaper than injecting - especially if you have to have a practice first.
 
Gave this to Henry earlier today!

Sedalin barely hits him, this made him very sleepy and he looked like he's been vet sedated in 30 mins! had to leave him for yard owner to sort out in the end after it still hadnt worn off after 1hr! am told he is only just waking up now 2.5hrs on!
 
We've used this on a few of the horses at work and it seems to vary for each horse if it works or not. For some horses we've had to use some Sedalin to make them sleepy then top them up with Domosedan. But for the horses it does work on it's great and cheaper then getting the vet out. Also, some horses aren't very helpful when trying to put under their tounge!

My vet has suggested this may work for our pony when neighbours from hell hold their firework party. He was so bad the year before last we moved him to another yard last year but I'd like to keep him at home this year if at all possible so I'm really interested to hear the replies.
