We have now had our much loved black lab dog for about a year. He has been so easy to train and has such a fabulous temperament we have decided to get another one. Before we got him I had wanted a bitch - my question is what do you very experienced people think I should have now? Would it work to have one of each, or should I now stick with another dog? We will be getting another lab but won't be using them breeding.

It is planned to do some gundog work with the older one next year.

Thanks for any advice!

I would avoid getting a black bitch. Some, though not all, can be very bright, pushy and feisty! If you can handle that then you could certainly consider one, but if you're used to a lovely calm dog you might find it a culture shock! If you liked the males I would personally have another boy - how about a yellow one?

Ok interesting, thanks. Didn't know about the black bitch thing. In an ideal world I would love a red fox bitch but there don't seem to be many around. Hmmm

I think it depends on the individual dog and if yours would accept a dog or bitch into the house I have five, four border collies and a working cocker spaniel there are three dogs and two bitches, they get on fine, I would think the most important consideration would be neutering, is your boy entire or neutered? if you have a girl will it be spayed or if not how will you separate them during the seasons? She can be neutered before her first season. if you do your homework and meet the parents etc etc then the breeder should be able to give you a reasonable Idea of what to expect. From personal experience I would say that it's the individual dog you have to cater for and if you can manage the season issue then there should be no reason at all not to get a bitch, the important bit is in the breeding :D good luck :):)
