Hi!

Brought our new baby home today. She's gorgeous and going to fit in really well. However, we have 1 tiny prob. She wont eat of a bowl.

We've known this from the start. Her poor foster mum has tried everthing to get her to eat from a bowl.

She will happily eat out of your hand, and treats will go down well. She will eat a small amount out of a very shallow bowl (I'm using a lid) then she'll eat some more but only if you hand feed it to her.

I'm going to try and find something she really likes, she's got pedigree puppy complete at the mo, as it's what she's used to. I'm worried that she's not eating enough, as was her foster mummy.

Is there anything i could try? She's tried the hanging out til she's hungry, it didn't work. She is very little too, although I woujldn't say vastly underweight.

Thanks for any advice xxxx

How about using a saucer? Just to get her used to the idea and gradually change the depth of what you use. Our cat was the same... but she finally came around!

I am using a tupperware lid at the mo, and she ate a little bit this afternoon, after I put the sauce stuff on it her foster mum gave me.

I dont think it's an issue with what she's eating out of, I think it's a 'I wanna be fed by hand thing'??

It's on her puppy mat so it satys put.

I've just given her a little more and she wont eat it, even with the sauce on! I know it's only her first day with me but she apparently been like this all the way along grrr

hi there put it down for 10 mins then take it up for 2 hours keep doing this for her and she WILL eat you have to be the master of the packe think of how dogs are in a pack the alpah eats frist then lesser ones eat second it takes some persaverance but it will work for you

Really? The only reason she's got it is Jenny had her on it, and I didn't want to change everything over too quickly.

You're not interfering at all, the same as the horses, I'm always appreciative of advice, esp as if it weren't for you we wouldn't have our baby!! xx

do you think he would refuse a bit of freshly cooked chicken if you were to put it in a bowl i dont know of many dogs who would worth a try....

Funny you should say that, guess what she had for dinner??

( Im assuming she drinks water here.....)

Josie put a different feed in a bowl, put the bowl or a plate on the floor, put the puppy in the same room, shut the door and leave her alone with it for 15 minutes. Dont stand over her, dont talk to her, dont stroke her just leave her completely alone. If she is hungry she WILL eat. Forget sauces, tempting treats or all the other stuff we delight in fussing them with or you WILL end up with the fussiest dog on the planet and make a rod for your own back.

Just because she is small doesnt mean its because she wont eat. If she is active and healthy then she is obviously well nourised.

You need to be tough....I know its hard but it will work if you persevere.
