Hi All

I post a lot in the Horsey sections on here, this is my first time in 'Dogs' so sorry if this has already been done but just want to pick brains...

Ive always owned dogs whilst living with my parents, over the years i've had 4 Terriers, the last one unfortunately passed away 3 months ago after 14 very happy years. I now live with OH, We are very settled and lead quite an outdoor life, we have decided to get a new dog, found the puppy I want (bred by a guy in the village, so know family and mummy dog very well) OH loves him too and were picking him up in the new year,

So Ive had lots of dogs before, Im under no illusion of how much hard work it will be etc, BUT...Ive never done it by my self!!

Mum always took charge with house training and obediance classes etc, so whilst I know what Im letting myself in for I dont really have a clue where to start, Im going to head out at lunch to get a decent puppy book (any one got any suggests on that? any particularly good ones out there??)

So basically Im looking for general advice, guidance comments ideas etc,

Im not completely on my own, best friend is an agility/obediance fanatic, so will drafting her in to help with training, and will attedn classes, I guess its all the stuff in between that Im not sure about

Its pretty basic but remarkably useful....The Kennel Club produce a handbookt about puppies and all the little things you need to think about when taking one on.

Ive had dogs all my life and even now I have found this little booklet to be really useful.

Worth looking on their website to see if you can get one or if you like I can send you mine..

Id go to the classes before you get the pup for some advice as well on things to try to do prior to attending etc....

be prepared for a number of sleepless nights, but then followed by much fun and swearing!

Hes a jack russell, and will be 8 weeks when I pick him up.

Everyone I speak to agrees on the crate, so will definitely give that a try.

Ive had a look on the kennel club website, but cant seem to spot it, do you have a link or if you do have a copy you'd willing to share, i'd be more than grateful.

I guess no one ever knows everthing, and its hard to give advice unless Im a bit more specific, so I guess the question is, is there any thing in particular that you learnt that no body prepaed you for, or things you delat with that wasnt covered by any book??
 
Go to puppy socialisation classes as quickly as possible (i.e. when vacs are complete) and try to expose the puppy to as many different situations as possible in a calm and encouraging manner. Take him to see traffic, trains, shops, people, cows, sheep, other dogs, young children, as many different things as you can think of.

Before you choose a training class do a bit of reading about the different methods and check the class out to confirm that you will be happy to train your puppy this way.
