Hello

We have just gotten a GSD x husky. He is 14 weeks old.

Can anyone let me know how much you can exercise them before they are fully grown?

I have been taking him for walks for 15 minutes at a time - 1st thing in the morning and after work. is this enought/ too much?

At the weekend we go to the beach and he runs aroung like a loonie, should we stop this or will he stop when he is tired?

How long till he can be exercised without any worries?

thank you

Yes, a couple of short walks, no longer than 15 mins is good. And don't let him climb the stairs if you can help it. Is he a rescue dog?

thanks, he came from a friend of a friend. they had a new baby and felt they could not cope with a pup and a baby! i know i got the right one!

What about running around on the beach, will he know when he has had enough and stop?

No worries about stairs, we don't have any here, just the one step in the house!

I have a... 17 month old, ish, Sibe Husky Pup, mad as a hatter - or a gang of hatters.

One thing about Huskies is they will run and run and run and run - Well you get the picture, that's why most owners have to keep their dog on a lead at all times, though with mine, after allot of my attention, long walks and good food, it's safe to let her off the lead, like other Huskies she runs, but runs around in wide circles around me or runs away amazingly fast, realises she's gone to far, and belts back just as fast.

I don't think looning should be a problem, mine has looned since the day I got her, at a very young age, can't quite remember when... I think she was about 12 weeks old, I took her for a hour, or so, long walk up to the vets in the next town to have her top up vaccination, with a short 5 minute break around half an hour through the walk, she was fine and thoroughly enjoyed it, another thing about Huskies is that it's ALLOT better to walk them too much then not enough.

In short: 15 minutes should be fine but longer should be fine too, just monitor Socks', basically - each dog is different some are lazy, some are sporty, some are soppy, some are all of the above and then some.

Well good luck!

A year for big dog even a little longer! But my experience is with Giant breeds and not large breeds. Maybe somebody a little more qualified can help! Sorry! Your pup sounds like a right character though!

We kept walks with our pup to under 30 mins until she was about 8 months old. She did have the odd walk longer than that, but as a rule we were told to keep walks pretty short for as long as possible. We did let her have a good run around as she did need to let off a bit of steam, but wouldn't let her do it excessively. Now she's ten months old we take her out for a bit longer, which I think strictly speaking is a bit too young, but like your dog ours has bundles of energy and she needs the exercise! I think what I'm trying to say is do things in moderation

We were recommended a book by Gwen Bailey (called the Perfect Puppy) by a dog training friend, and would definitely recommend it - loads of useful info, and you can pick up second hand copies on ebay.
