Picking up new lab puppy on the 28th December, Ciara. Here she is at 4 weeks...

And her brohthers and sisters

Just a couple of questions, its donkeys years since we had a pup!
Our adult dogs aren't jabbed, they are done when we get them (rescues) but not boosted annually.
She has been living in an outside kennel with mum but hasn't seen the world, of course. If we pick her up on the same day that she has her jabs should she be OK mixing with ours? We live on a farm and don't really see other dogs about. If not, any suggestions?
Thanks

I don' t think you should mix them. She will be vulnerable to anything as she is only a baby. They shouldn't mix until they have had the last injection, from memory a few days after that. Why don't you keep your doggies up to date? Cute girlie by the way.

Hi, I bought our lab puppy home 2 weeks ago, have lots of fun with Ciara

I would not mix them either to be honest, she is very vulnerable and not used to dogs other than her family. I have two biggies and always keep their boosters up to date but because they are both due boosters, I have kept Layla out of the garden until she has her second. Would rather be safe than sorry.
I have to say, those are really chubby little babies aren't they

Fair points, but what have you done with her if you haven't let her in the garden?
We don't have ours boosted as OH used to work for the hunt and pointed out that hounds aren't done annually. Most vets agree its unnecessary.

Cute puppy hope you have lots of fun with her!

When I got my last lab pup 2+ yrs ago my old girl was not up to date with jabs (7 yrs since she was last jabbed). Couldn't keep them seperated & didnt really have a problem with it as my girl was healthy. Didn't have a problem with mine.

Also don't have garden so she had to go out on public land to toilet but I didn't let her mix with dogs till she'd had her 2 jabs.

Like Clodagh says hounds in packs are generally not done annually & they don't have problems but maybe they have better natural immunity??

Who knows!

Hi, I do realise boosters are not necessarily needed. When I had Bailey his breeder asked me to get him blood tested after his first set of vaccs, both my vet and his 2 year old nurse told me it was a waste of money, but hey he came back and he was not covered for anything so had to have the whole course again. I also know a lot of people who do bloods every year rather than pumping them full of drugs (ie the booster).
It is personal preference, but my garden is horrible - I inherited a rather nasty bogmire and I am not convinced with all the wees and poos and other possible mixing germs she would be safe.

Not sure what you mean by what have I done with her though?

Absolutely personal preference, I honestly didnt mean for my other post to sound anything but, but you asked our suggestions and I gave you mine - again though, only mine and everyone is different

just to clarify, I do pick up the poos as soon as the dogs go, but even when you do little bits stay on the ground and with the rain etc you just don't know what is mixing out there..it's a creepy place

I didn't mean it rudely - but where have you taken the puppy for her poos if not in the garden? Sorry.

I'm lucky with at least one of our dogs, my lurcher jumpes out of our garden and goes and poos in next doors - luckily next door is my mother-in-law!

I didn't take it rudely, don't worry, was just confused

She is puppy pad trained, well, mostly - on occasion she moves around them to find just the right spot then wanders just off it at the wrong moment.
She has her second vaccination next week - I just wish the garden would dry out enough so that she would not sink if she went out. She did go out when it was really hard frost but only onto the patio as it was more fun for her to sit and watch the others.
I am having problems with my neighbours right now, Bailey finds it fun to jump at the fence (5 ft wooden slat) to see the puppy next door, but the owners think he is being vicious and want the fencing changed. So to have him jump in their garden for a poop may not help matters there

Perhaps not the way forward in neighbourly relations!

Naughty Bailey. I don't see how changing the fence would help? What do they want instead?
I am so excited about Ciara, can't wait!

well I put a new back run in of individual lengths of wood 6' high (not neighbours boundary) and that is really sturdy. The one between me and the moaners is 5' high panels which are not that strong, so when dearly beloved Bailey leaps to say hi it sways quite a lot. I think I will just buy some of those big oak tubs and put some evergreens in them to keep him from getting to the fence. I even thought about a run of electric fencing there this morning.
New puppies are great, I am so glad I got Layla, even though she is a very confident and demanding moo - there is no difference to me to having a new puppy and a new baby - all routines, sleep patterns and jobs go out the window

Ciara looks lovely. May I ask you something, I really hope you don't take it the wrong way and I wondered what your thoughts were, but they do seem quite chubby babies, mainly the two yellows - is it just the photo or did you think they were also? Layla is from chunky stock, not at all working type, and she is nowhere near as .. umm..portly?
smile.gif

The yellows are huge, absolutely solid. Ciara was and is the smallest of the litter, but there are only two bitches and they both seem quite 'normal' all the dogs are solid and yes the yellows are like brick outhouses.
I will try to upload a pic of mum, shes tall and lean. Dad is a working type but much bigger, I have only got a pic of his head!

Evergreens in pots sounds like a good idea, but electric fencing might stop him doing it and then you can take it down again but he will have learned? We had a working lab who was zapped by electric fence around a release pen and she would never go near it again.

Those yellows, do indeed look like they may have eaten another a few litter mates

....that has to be the fattest puppy I have ever seen lol.....I would get yours wormed when u get her home

Re vaxes, I would obs, keep your dogs confined to your own garden , till the little one is fully vaxed
