We went to see some Jack Russel puppies yesterday. We picked one of they boys as we already have a staffie bitch. We did have a jack Russel but we lost him last year he went to sleep on the couch an never woke up. We are going to pick him up next month when we move to our neŵ house.

Can anyone advise me about collars or harnesses. What would you recommend. The old jack Russell was 6 months when we got him from a rescue and was very sick when we got him so we couldn't do much with him to start with. So we haven't had this problem before.

We are going to call him Dobby

Love the head markings, very sweet.
Sorry no help with your question, I have no experience of small dogs. Have fun though!

Day to day collar you'd be best with a fabric one, wait till fully grown before getting a good leather one (unless you have lots to spend now). J.H.Leather will make just about anything in leather (and all colours too) if you want, can highly reccommend :)
Harness, yes a good idea, but not just yet as pups too small. I'd wait till getting on for 10+ weeks and then only wearing for a short time to start with.
Perhaps worth checking local vets etc, many have puppy parties these days for socialisation sessions, and they will have details of local puppy training classes. You can then pick brains of trainers ref harness's then.
Hope all goes well :)

Very cute, I fixed the pics for you!

My puppy trainers don't like harnesses as a rule, might be worth just seeing how you get on with the collar and lead before investing in other bits of equipment.

He is very cute indeed, looks like he will have a good head. Gorgeous. :-)
I would put a fabric puppy collar on him once you have had him a few days and just leave it on until he stops noticing it. (days probably, although I do take them off at night). Like foals, you don't want him to learn to pull so it is all working with him not fighting the collar and then the lead. Our pup at nearly 5 months is walking nicely to heel now, without really knowing she is doing it.

Fab thanks for your replies and thanks for fixing the link I will definitely get him a fabric puppy collar

Id want a harness on a small type cos I'd be paranoid about tracheal collapse. I have no idea if that's a thing in JRTs, I know it's possible in Yorkshire terriers.

Defo get a harness when he starts going out and about. I have a harness for my very small terrier I think the best thing to do is to go to the pet store and try on. The sizes vary so much. My dog is only 6kg and many small ones are too small and the medium ones are too big. We ended up with one you adjust from the top and it is brilliant for her but all dogs are different shapes.

Be very careful regarding harnesses. The ones that pets at home tend to sell tend to be very easy for dogs to get loose from. I have see no folks standing holding a harness and flexi whilst the dog is zooming around loose on the Street.. One of the best harnesses is the "best fit" harness from dog games as they come in 3 pieces and can be mix and match to get a good fit.
Legally the dog must wear a collar and Id disc when in a public place

gorgeous!

some harnesses are easy for pups to wriggle out of. one of the best I've seen for general walking about are the perfect fit ones-not the cheapest but pretty good. I also had an easidog breastplate one when Quarrie was really wee followed by a ruffwear front entry one-didnt particularly love either tbh, not as good as the perfect fit. remember that a dog will only pull in a harness or collar if you teach it to ;)
