Today, a little rescue pony arrived with me from a friend to be a companion for my new horse. We know little about him. Unsure of age - vet says 1, but his tail is very full and long (never seen a yearling with such a long thick mane and tail). We'd guess 2? He had bloomin awful feet that were curled up at the toes. These are lots better now. He was given steroids and a wormer for a heavy worm infestation. Still has the big fat belly though.
I want to get him fit and healthy again; his coat is dull, he has a big belly but his spine is sticking out a little so would say he is still underweight and possibly still wormy. What should I be doing to get him right again? we have plenty of good grass, but would a balancer help (is there a specific one for youngsters?) How can we get a more accurate age for him? Going out for wormer in the morning, what one is best for this poor guy? I normally just worm count and treat if and when required - never actually had a wormy horse before!
He is a sweet little thing. Very nervous, but followed me around the field while I was doing electric fencing. Doesn't lead very well, still needs an arm around his bum like a foal. Little sod jumped electric fencing to have a nose around fields next door and then jumped back in while we were trying to catch him, so guess he's going to be a real character when he is better - eyes are still sad and hollow looking at the mo
