Today, a little rescue pony arrived with me from a friend to be a companion for my new horse. We know little about him. Unsure of age - vet says 1, but his tail is very full and long (never seen a yearling with such a long thick mane and tail). We'd guess 2? He had bloomin awful feet that were curled up at the toes. These are lots better now. He was given steroids and a wormer for a heavy worm infestation. Still has the big fat belly though.

I want to get him fit and healthy again; his coat is dull, he has a big belly but his spine is sticking out a little so would say he is still underweight and possibly still wormy. What should I be doing to get him right again? we have plenty of good grass, but would a balancer help (is there a specific one for youngsters?) How can we get a more accurate age for him? Going out for wormer in the morning, what one is best for this poor guy? I normally just worm count and treat if and when required - never actually had a wormy horse before!

He is a sweet little thing. Very nervous, but followed me around the field while I was doing electric fencing. Doesn't lead very well, still needs an arm around his bum like a foal. Little sod jumped electric fencing to have a nose around fields next door and then jumped back in while we were trying to catch him, so guess he's going to be a real character when he is better - eyes are still sad and hollow looking at the mo :(

poor little soul. :(

I would try baileys stud balancer, if you don't want to give a full on youngstock feed, its lower calorie but has all the right stuff in (vits, mins and amino acids) for growth, good feet and decent coat. Once you're sure you've got rid of the worms then it might be worth thinking about a youngstock feed to help him have all the calories he needs to grow and put on a bit of weight.

a dose of equest or equest pramox would be suitable (as long as you're sure he's over 4 months), but you could take a sample now for a worm count and another later to make sure.

as for teeth....http://www.nwequinedentistry.com/Tooth By Tooth.html does a basic description
http://drequine.com/index.php?p=201 does a chart on when each tooth erupts

keep us in before and after pics please!!

Just had a look at passport so i can send it off and get owner changed to me. First registered keeper (and person who applied for passport a few weeks ago) is Kent Police - reckon they'll be able to shed any light on his past if I ring them? Or will they not be able to share this info?
