wow did anyone else see the bloke on the itv news telling us all that the sun is decreasing in its activities???? that is like the opposite to global warming. All because i stopped using carrier bags. I cant wait for the new measures they will be bringing in. We will all have to buy 4x4s and fart a lot. I am going to leave the outside light on all night and leave my electric blanket on too.!!!

Sadly there is too much at stake for the global warming con to be stopped just yet, people are making too much money, and for others it's like a religion , its given the boffins money for reserch and power and made failed politicians like All Gore famous and wealthy..no we will pay a high price for this folly sadly....

Wow, I'm impressed - you have an electic blanket. Lucky you - I have a snoring OH with a cold botty and a grumpy Gordon Setter. I want to help reverse the sun's decline - I want an electric blanket!!!!!!!!!

Look up global dimming. Goes hand in hand with global warming. Actually climate change is the more apporpriate term to use when looking at the changes which have been observed. Still lots of research on if this is a natural phenomenom and part of the cyclical changes in the earths weather patterns (e.g. ice age) or if human interactions are contributing factors.

All of this is now taught in secondary schools in geography and science

As a scientist - the main problem is not that the earth is warming or cooling, this has happened lots in the past, but the rate at which it is happening

Mother Nature/evolution/ ecosytems what ever you call it can not adapt to changes fast enough for species (plant, animal etc) to survive -> this is the real problem.

It doesn't need a rocket scientist to tell you the sun is dying....it's a star and all stars do is burn until there is no fuel left. Think of it as a lightbulb that will eventually go out...not so easy to change though unfortunately...but bu99er all we can do about it too.

It's not that it's dying, the sun has cycles where it doesn't do much. I guess it's a bloke.

After a year where the sun has been lazy, the earth is cool for a very, very long time (about 30 years, in fact). Not sure what happens when the sun is active, but presumably about 30 years of hot.

I don't believe in "global warming". Climate change is normal and natural and I don't agree that trying to prevent it, even if it's accelerated, is going to end nicely for everyone involved.

"Global Warming" itself is an earner set up by the government to, well, earn. Ah well.

I don't believe in "global warming" either. I do believe in climate change as it would be worrying not to have climate change, either short term in response to volcanic activity, or more longer term, but not the hysteria or jumping on the bandwagon that goes with it. Nor the excessive taxes or the funding of badly done, skewed studies to "prove it" funded by organisations with an interest in doing so. Which fail to take account of the urban nature of the locations where temperature readings are read. The planet is far cleaner than 150 years ago.

My family own estates in Shetland and from the settlement activity and food records from 3-4000 years ago, it was obvious that the climate up there was much warmer than it is now and it was quite a desirable place to live. Grain was grown successfully, supplemented by plentiful fish stocks. Perhaps we should be looking at how patterns of settlement harm the environment, such as the tendency to live in modern houses in housing estates, drive small cheap cars which only last a few years, deforistation leading to soils becoming acidic and useless, commercial overfishing, etc and promote activities such as reclaiming land from the sea like the Dutch rather than bemonaing the natural process of coastal erosion but doing nothing about it.

i think the weather runs on very long (years) cycles. i remember winters like this as a child in scotland. if the sun does 'burn out' i daresay most of us wont be here to witness it !..............

for what its worth thats the theory i go with too. I could actually say that i know this for a fact as no one will live long enough to prove me wrong!

our sun is in the mains sequence phase and has quite a few years and more phases yet before it dies!

Global warming/climate change - natural cycle of the earth, the amount of literature produced should be taken with a pinch of salt, especially Al Gore and his film.

Good to see most of you looking sceptically at global warming. There have been periods of warming and cooling and I think most of these changes can be put down to the sun.

It has many cycles which we are only just beginning to look at - let alone understand!

Once upon at time, the North Sea was dry and Stone Age folks could walk across it from Europe - the water was tied up in a mile of ice that covered most of Great Britain - when it melted the sea ( everywhere ) rose by 150ft - now that IS Global Warming! But of course, we didn't do it.

Unfortunately, none of the so called pointers to what we think happened in the past tie in exactly with other data as we'd like it to - hence those cheeky chaps who got caught out fiddling the figures! Tree rings map the weather but they don't fit the Oxygen & Carbon isotopes found in ancient ice etc., etc. So at the moment it's anyone's guess.

I can tell you for a fact, that as the sun is nuclear powered and each nuclear reaction happens on such a small scale at specific angles ( like snooker balls ) a particle is likely to spend a lot of time travelling around in circles - inside the sun. It could take half a million years for one to work its way to the surface - once there - it can speed its way here in 8 minutes giving us light and heat. The downside of that is - the sun could have stopped working half a million years ago and we won't find out till tomorrow!
