We have a new surface at new yard but YO unsure how to manage it.It has only been down 3 days.A girl lunged on it today and really run her horse through it, really churned it up.YO not a happy man.
Is there any way to keep surface good?Any tips on what YO should and shouldn't be doing?

Our surface is silica sand and rubber. TBH it will get churned up, especially with lunging. At our yard it is graded every day/every other day with the quad bike and chain harrow type equipment (not really sure what it is!) This helps to flatten the surface again and help raise the rubber back to the surface. When it is very dry like it has been this summer we have to water it regularly with a sprinkler to stop it from riding quite deep, also no one is allowed to lunge in it when it gets that bad.

Sorry don't know too much about schools but that is how they manage the arena at my yard! :)

Hi thanks for reply.
We have since found out some yards with silca sand/rubber surface have banned lungeing in them.Is this normal practice and why?
He harrowed/raked it today so looks a wee bit better.
Does anyone know how long it takes to 'settle in'?

If the sand is right, after initial rolling it really shouldn't move much at all. I had this problem, got two independent opinions on the sand and it was deemed unsuitable, because I had persevered for so long trying to keep it level and compacted thinking I had done something wrong, I was unable to get the sand supplier to do anything about it. In the end I bought Clopf stabilizer, rotovated in, and it is much much better.

He has been advised by company in England (we are in NE Scot). He has 110 ton of silca sand which gave him roughly 4 inches sand then 2 inches rubber. The sand was rolled prior to rubber going on.
Will let him know about this stabaliser stuff. Thanks really helpful.

I have the same, it needs regular harrowing and is best after its been raining as firms up a bit more. At the moment I can't harrow mine, so its a right state!
