I'm usually a New Lounge poster but would love some doggie advice please,my brother-in-law recently "took in" a Jack Russell bitch approx 2 years old, she was skinny/filthy had a few cuts/grazes and generally looked like she'd been dragged through a hedge backwards, she started to look a litlte better picking up weight etc then in the last couple of weeks she had been acting strange, Wednesday she gave birth to 2 puppies, a girl and a boy, brother-in-law is keeping girl, myself and hubby are having the boy (we already have a super mad playful boxer who will love a little friend) sorry i'm rambling but that's the background.

Brother-in-law rang me this evening to say he's worried as he has noticed the boy puppy has and extra toe on each of his back paws and the girl has an extra toe on one of her back paws.

I wondered if it may be that they are dew claws but cause they are so young they look like extra toes, but he is convinced they are extra toes  - i'm driving to his tomorrow to have a gander and we are going to phone a vet for some advice, just wondered if anyone had heard of this and if its a problem.

Pics just for a cute value (ohh and his name is Duke) :D

Thankyou.

Without seeing it's hard to tell but does sound like dew claws, they're different on the back than they are at the front, or at least my JRT's were when she was a puppy. I'll see if I have any clear piccies

ETA: Found a couple, not brilliant but give the idea. They looked like extra toes instead of just nail like the front dew - does that make sense? We had them removed as back dews can cause trouble, they weren't actually joined to the bone or anything.

She's the darker one with her feet in the air

Probably just dew claws, you can have them removed if you wish, my chap had his off when neutered. Sometimes dogs do have extra 'normal' toes too, its no big deal and doesnt mean anything is wrong with the pup or he is inbred/deformed/not right in any way. Seriously, dont worry :)
