But apparently it will be only legal to tow a twin axel trailer with a 4x4 soon.

Anyone know if this is true? As there doesn't seem to be anything on the net about it!

Not heard this and surely it makes no sense, some large estates have better towing capability than small 4x4s.

It could be a consideration of law regarding kerb weight where in essence only a big 4x4 would be heavy enough.

TBH if it were true I would have expected caravaners/caravan websites to have picked up on this if it applied to all twin axles...so something would have come up on your web search.

what would you tow it with then?!

I think she meant that you would have to use a 4x4 and not a 'car'.

but thats been the law for a while.

The caravan lobby is so strong that they would never be able to pass this law anyway!! It's based on weight, not whether or not your car is 4x4.

If that is on an irish forum then surely that is Irish Republic legislation not British so totally different.

OK just for example we looked at freelanders for towing (small 4x4) and found we could not tow anymore than with our Saab Estate. The kerb weight was virtually identical. So the type of vehicle is not really the issue it is the weight.

Ideally you tow no more than 85% of your kerbweight, however you are not currently legally obliged to stick to this.

Also can't see anything about this on the NTTA website

I'm pretty sure they would never try to enforce a law like this and it is not the case now. How could it be said that you could tow a twin axle trailer with a small 4x4 (such as this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Justy) but not a transit van (or similar) which has a much higher towing capacity yet is rear wheel drive.

Any vehicle you buy will have the maximum towing capacity and maximum nose weight specified in the users handbook. These are what are important when towing. If you stay within these limits then you should be fine. We used to tow a twin axle trailer with a rally car on it perfectly fine with a 2.5 v6 vauxhall vectra (although we now upgraded our towing vehicle) and we were within the towing limits for the vehicle.

Just because a vehicle has 4 wheel drive doesn't necessarily make it a better towing vehicle.

Sorry to be getting techy...

yes its true....... but only if your towing with a green car and have a leprechaun as a passinger...or reside in the wonderfull emrald isle, otherwise any type of trailer is fine in the UK so long as you dont exceed the car manufactures recomended towing limit.....
