New trailer security!?

Just bought a new trailer, which is the best recommended insurance approved hitch lock and wheel lock? Also which insurance where i dont need to swap my car? Also stupid question but how do i prevent theft while were out say at a beach carpark?? Its already data tagged

My YO said that the bulldog hitch locks are somewhere near the gold standard - there are lots of types depending on what hitch you have

Put your mobile number in large numbers on the roof.
When parked up we leave the trailer attached to the car and we can lock the hitch on. There is an integrated lock on the hitch itself. We also attach the wheel clamp.

The bulldog hitch lock really is brilliant, just make sure you never lose the key.

All the above, plus you can duct tape a personal attack alarm under the body of the trailer, with the pull cord attached to the car. Won't stop theft, but will alert everyone! Make sure you can access the alarm though, for the time you forget to unfasten the pull cord.

Ref leaving the trailer unattended, the Bulldog Hitchlock I had could be applied when the trailer was hitched to the vehicle - although you obviously wouldn't leave it on for when you're towing.

I would personally recommend a multi layer approach to your trailer security. Hitchlock, wheel lock, data tag, postcode - plus any decals that you fancy to make your trailer unique and more easily identifiable - they're all deterrents.

Both a Bulldog wheel clamp and a Bulldog hitch lock. Depending on where you keep your trailer, you could also install a ground anchor.

Use both the wheelclamp and hitchlock when out and about.

I recommend putting one of those stickers on the back asking for it to be stopped if seen out on the roads between certain hours (usually late).

Trackers are cheap . If they want it they will take it. Trackers give you the chance of recovering it.

I use a wheel lock all the time whenever it is left, plus an SAS Force hitch lock which can be used either when hitched up or not.
Also has these on at home all the time.

This is all really useful! Going to get insurance and I reckon if someone wants it bad enough they'll just take it! But want to be covered for insurances. That's good to know the hitch lock can be put on while out with the car attached. So Im probably best going for both wheel and hitch even when out in say a forestry car park? The store yard has a guard dog and on site owner with cctv so pretty secure (touch wood) in the time Ive been there.. just more worried about being out and getting back from a hack and the trailer being gone !

More justification for the pink wrap if I can work out how /where to get this done to deter thieves haha!

SAS locks are generally accepted by most insurance policies but check!

Data tag system with micro dots is great, you basically hide tags on the trailer and tiny little dots which thieves will struggle to remove fully…if it got stolen and scanned it would come up as yours. There is a big warning sticker too.

And some people put Apple air tags on their trailers or GPS trackers.

Oh and your postcode on the roof! You can buy the letters on eBay x

The reasons that I advocate putting your phone number on the roof are two fold. A post code can include dozens of houses, so it might not be that easy to find the owner, the police won't go door to door looking, they haven't got the time or resources and, with a mobile number, they can contact you directly and far more quickly, meaning the trailer is more likely to be recovered.

Paint the postcode, forward slash, house number. Wouldn't recommend putting your phone number on the roof - people do have bedroom windows and can easily see a phone number.

A bit more extreme and a PITA if you use your trailer a lot, but my dad used to take the back wheels off all our trailers (luckily he was the one hitching up and sorting trailers on show days!) reason was that there was a spate of thefts where they used a reason high vehicle or the hitch was positioned really high on the vehicle so the front wheels won't touch the floor/road - most people put the wheel lock on the front wheels you see.

I've previously posted this ref trailer security....

A friend's horse decided to sharpen his teeth on the outside of the panels of her then new Ifor Williams 510 - leaving big arcs scraped into the paintwork.

The trailer was stored at the yard with similar IW trailers, and hers was the only one left behind when the thieves broke in and stole the other trailers!

So as others have said above, try and make your trailer a bit unique - custom paint job / decals / your postcode stenciled onto every panel, etc etc.

Once we leave our current yard it will be stored in a field which makes me anxious. Will be insured with hitchlock, clamp, datatag etc but hoping to make it extremely pretty/unattractive to thieves!

I think my friend used a cricut machine to make her stickers up.

My used red Bulldog hitch (with spare keys) is for sale, £40, if anyone would like it. (I used it on my IW505 for some years but have just had a new front tow coupling installed which has integral lock in it, and the Bulldog hitchlock won't fit over the top of it). I'm in Cambs.

Security: postcode painted on roof and top panels in big letters/numbers. Wheel lock on one rearmost (not a frontmost) wheel. Hitchlock on front. If possible, keep it in gated or locked compound, or with other vehicles parked in front of it to block it in.

I've painted pictures of horses on the side and rear panels too, partly because I like painting horses. Makes it stand out in a carpark full of IW trailers!

Second- any inspiration for trailer decals? Trailer serviced today passed with flying colours so thats a relief! want sophisticated/ mininal larger horse graphics with some smaller bespoke text maybe? I can't find many ideas online (not bothered about resale value impact )

Look up local signwriters. They can create bespoke self adhesive 'anything' for you.
