Have just found out now that you have to take atest to transport horses in your trailer.

\this is for all of us even if we passed our tests ages ago and it costs £75!!

Can anyone shed any light on this new stealth tax

thanks

? Isnt the test only if you have passed your test after a certain date? I had to do mine yet my brother didnt as he passed his driving test a few years before me (before the date). Is this some new law where EVERYBODY has to do it??? TBH I find this better, I have never understood why I had to take a test whereas my brother and parents etc. didnt!

if you passed your driving test after 1997, then you have to take the car and trailer B+E test, to allow you to tow legally! test costs £89, and you have to reverse, hitch up etc unaided, then drive around the roads for about an hour, as if you were taking your car test

if you passed beofre 1997 then you dont have to take the test!

Isn't it for transporting animals over 40 miles or under 8 hours for commercial reasons or over 8 hours for commercial reasons then you need to hold a current certificate of competence. Those transporting animals over 40 miles but under 8 hours take NPTC 2 travel of animals (short journeys) and those who transport over 8 hours take NPTC level 2 long distance transport. But I'm not really clear on what constitutes commercial reasons. As most of the large competition centres, south view, kelsall hill, smallwood are over 40 miles from here I'm not sure if that constitutes commercial reasons if you don't win any prize money. I am also at a loss as to what the difference is in the welfare of your animals between attending them to compete or attending them to use the facilities. Apparently if you are breeder and sell your youngstock and travel over 40 miles to a show even if there is no prize money then you need a certificate as you are operating a commercial enterprise. Any body else any ideas???

I'm not sure of the mileage/hours involved but I was wondering if you meant the rules that TirionWirion
posted about too?

We seem to be in the same area ( Colwyn Bay). I had heard of courses being run at Valley (Siwan's) place, but I'm still not sure about it. Nobody in England seems to have heard about it.

I , like you, have to travel into Cheshire to compete so am a bit confused. From what I've read It's mainly for dealers and transporters but I will make a few phone calls before putting myself on a course and parting with hard earned cash.

Hi Boris we have been sent an email by the pony club advertising a course at Northop college but I can't upload the flyer onto the forum. The comment was that some members would need it and I thought that it referred to the 40 mile rule as they hold XC training sessions at Kelsall and Somerford and also for the PC mounted games team

I took the course/test "Transport of Live Animals By Road" a couple of weeks ago, which is what I think OP is referring to. There are two main bodies running the course, LANTRA and NTPC, have a look at this website for more details:

NTPC

Commercial journeys are those made for economic gain - this is a bit a of a grey area with regard to horses

our course instructor was unable to answer all the horse related questions
