New Trend....

Not being critical at all but in the last few weeks everywhere I look I see people with a saddlecloth and a half numnah, just seems to be the "fashion" at the moment....

Again I stress not being critical, just becoming more and more common!

I just don't understand why the saddlecloth is next to the back and the half numnah on top (to keep it clean I suppose)

Surely for the sheepskin to do it's job properly it would have to be next to the skin?
 
If the saddle fits the horse correctly why bother stuffing loads of things under the saddle which only interferes with the fit? A thin numnah or saddle cloth should surfice surely.

Well if the saddle is actually fitted with the sheepskin underneath it, then there isn’t a problem. They are great for young horses back and horse’s whose spines are prominent.
 
It makes me laugh when you see people using remedial equipment, ie, something you use till the horse changes shape/you get tack that fits correctly/an issue is resolved.... simply because they think it looks good!

It doesn't look good! It looks like your horse has problems!

I bet that half the fleece risers, poll pads, gel pads etc are sold to people with horses who don't need them. If your tack fits correctly... there is no unacceptable pressure... unless the horse has other physical issues that demand the use of remedial kit... it is a bloomin waste of money.

Thing is that people think they are helping the horse by using a half numnah with a numnah... not taking in to account that the extra bulk will alter the fit of the saddle.
 
I only got my sheepskin 1/2 numnah last week and my horse actually goes nicer in it, not really sure why but he feels more comfortable from my point of view and his saddle fits better. I have to admit I bought the cheap synthetic sheepskin Shires one because my friend had one and I liked the look of it, but I think I'll always use it now. And I do use a thin saddlecloth underneath as well because I don't like the metal buckles of the girth to touch his skin, I was always told they shouldn't touch their skin.
 
I bought a brand new saddle, fitted by my saddler, (who I 100% trust) a few months ago. My horse previously had a badly fitting saddle and when he was sold to me, I was warned he can buck. He pretty much stopped bucking when we got the new saddle as it fitted him and the old one didn't! My saddler came back to check on the new saddle after a month and sold me a sheepskin half numnah and he has now completely stopped bucking (apart from cow kicking when he's super excited!!) and is nowhere near as cold backed with the sheepskin (he used to 'dip' a bit when I got on. I don't use the sheepskin as 'remedial' equipment, I use it because my horse is happier in it!!
 
I always ride my horses with a saddlecloth and a white sheepskin numnah. I have done this for the past 12 or so years so not really a new trend, in fatc, not a trend at all.

All the benefits of actually having the sheepskin next to your horses skin, whilst looking as good as having the 2 separate ones.
