We've had the same trimmer for the last 3 years who has done an amazing job with both my horses and my pony is the most comfortable he has ever been. My trimmer has been gradually bringing his toe back and xrays have shown that the reverse rotation of his pedal bone seems to have been corrected.

My trimmer can no longer cover our area so on recommendation from a friend I've booked another trimmer who is trained with Hoofing Marvellous but I've just been reading the tread about their approach and I'm now really worried! I'll obviously explain what we've been doing and and that we can't let his toe get long but it seems that there are real concerns about the HM approach to trimming.
What are people's thoughts? Should I give them a go and see, or cancel?!

Given you can't use your existing trimmer, I don't see you have much choice but to try someone else. You have a recommendation and you can explain.

The only thing I would say is if it's not working for you, swap.

I had my trimmer go on maternity leave and used the yard farrier on a temporary basis. I was surprised at how quickly things went downhill but 2 trims from my usual trimmer and hugely better already.

Depends. Is HM their only training, or just one aspect to a more complete training? Do they have any qualifications and are they registered with any regulatory bodies such as the EPA?
If it was HM only, I'd be cancelling, not just because that isn't actually proper training, but especially as you need to keep you boys toe short and they seem to have a dogmatic obsession with keeping toes long.

I'd see if you can get a local farrier to do a basic trim in the mean time, and look for someone better suited to your horses needs for the long term.
Here's the EPAs map of registered members, if it helps:

I'm not a follower of the HM practice, but i do read their FB posts. The long toe is only appropriate (in their eyes) when growing out severe anomalies/laminitis type attack. If your horses feet already look fairly normal they should trim to suit that.
I would meet them and see what they say

Im not sure you can with a new member.

OP's recommendation is from a friend I would be asking for one from the existing trimmer.

Alternatively put your area on here and someone may be able to help.

having seen so much of what HM have written, their criticism of other well established methods and facts plus their attitude to any discussion of their own method they would not be my choice.

I commented on another post about HM trimmers, where, sadly, we had an awful experience.

That said, I don't think they're all bad, albeit I dont agree with most of the nonsense they pedal.

My advice would be to keep a close eye on what the trimmer is doing and step in if you don't like what you see. Dont stand back in horror and stay silent, as I did. 🫣

I'm sure it will be fine. 🤞

I was thinking this. If your existing trimmer can’t cover you, can they give a recommendation for someone else?
I would think they have knowledge of other trimmers in their area and who is likely to work like them and who doesn’t.

I used one and really wish I hadn't. I'd cancel and as above ask your current trimmer who they would reccomend or just get a good farrier. A lot are far more open to not always usung shoes now.
