Looking for a new compact tractor to do general yard work with, ie pushing the muck heap up, towing the chain harrows and running the topper.

Seen these Siromer tractors advertised http://www.siromer.net/01_Agricultural-Equipment.htm - never seen one 'in the flesh' so not sure how good they are. Anyone had or used one?

Is this a case of too cheap to be true, should I stick with the trusty old Massey and treat it to an expensive dose of TLC? IE engine and hydraulic rebuild?

Ah the peril of dark nights and Ebay ;)....

stay away from chinese. japanese are great i have an iseki and a kubota. both done thousands of hours and easily repaired.

the chinese ones wont do the hours, my neighbour has a chinese one and hes done 8 hours! in 2 years and pipes are perished and electrics are knackered. mine do 8 hours a week and dont look as bad as his.

My father in law has had one of these for about 5 years. It does the job, but he has had a few mechanical issues, although probably mostly due in part to the fact he hardly uses it, then expects it to run ok. It tows a mobile field shelter which is a 24'x12' one, without issue, and is of great use for harrowing and the like.
He had an old fergie before this, which was a great workhorse, but he likes this one more as it is modern and easier to manoeuvre as well as being more comfy!

I asked for advice on this forum before we bought our compact tractor and was advised to go for a Kubota - which we did. It's been brilliant, despite being second hand and done a fair few hours it's always reliable and is very well engineered. Thanks to everyone who recommended this to us!

We bought a new Jinma about 10 or 11 years ago. They were the direct competitor to Siromer. We went with the Jinma because the salesman on the other end of the phone at Siromer wound up being a deal breaker (very bad "bedside" manner, which had nothing to do with the quality of the tractor). We've had the odd glitch with the Jinma, but it has been a workhorse for us. I'm not sure if Jinma is still in business, but would venture to say that the Siromer is basically the same machine. If you are willing to dig a bit deeper in your pocket, the Avant, from Finland, is the best piece of kit in the world. We have the 220, the baby of the their series of 6 different loaders/tractorish machines. Their website in England is so informative and descriptive...search AvantTecno. Their main office/shop is in Norfolk. The basic machine has so many different attachments for such diverse applications that one machine becomes dozens with the flick of a switch. We use ours for mucking out the fields (front loader bucket comes as standard with the machine); transporting bales of bedding/hay/straw, whatever, using the loading forks; digging holes and trenches with the mini-digger attachment; mowing areas of long, rank twitch grass in the paddocks with the mower attachment; picking up soiled straw and apple tree prunings with the grab attachment. Their website has videos of all the attachments and how they are used. The larger machines have even more impressive abilities and attachments, but for much more money. The 220 even goes through stable doors and can work in very tight spaces. No, I'm not an employee of Avant. I just think it's the most remarkable piece of engineering for horsey folks (and that wasn't even the market the company was targeting when it was developed).

Wouldn't waste my money frankly. all the Chinese made equipment that we have bought recently has died in short order. Our compact tractor is a John Deere and is a marvellous piece of kit. I would have another of those.

I have to speak as I find.

Rutland I think ours is a Jinma too, the name sounds familiar, I don't really care what it is called. having looked at the Siroma link it looks very similar to ours, just shinier and not so bent.

We bought a Chinese tractor 7 years ago, haven't killed it yet. God knows we are trying!

The front is a bit bent but that might have something to do with the fact that half a baler swung into it when it was being lifted. The canopy fell victim to a low branch but that's it. It is small enough to drive through the barn. We use it for everything, from field maintenance, snow ploughing, tilling, cutting, raking, it takes an auger and bush hog, we use it for logging, it lifts and stacks round bales (can't quite manage a 900lb Heston though) for what we want ours has done just fine.

We can't afford a FO great JD tractor, and we don't need an all singing, all dancing machine anyway, although we do have a mini one that cuts the grass.

I have heard nothing good about Siromer made in China get a British Built Classic and it will be apreachiating in Value as well.

Agreed. I bought a 1963 Ferguson 35, and it's been super-reliable. I could take it to vintage rallies if I wanted, but it is still a working machine. Starts every time, never says no, and I can't believe how much work it does on one tank of diesel.

Best of all is the 'little red tractor' vibe with the kids.

I'd steer clear of compact tractors altogether and go for a normal size one. Compacts are underpowered and far too easy to roll on uneven ground. I have a 70hp Case with loader arms so can shift large bales, a large bucket full of muck or aggregate, turn my own hay and tow/tip a 2.5T muck truck. Today it was moving sand for my new school. Framed grass harrow and roller are next purchases.

We have a 1953 Ferguson T20, Father is working on fitting the bucket on the front, but has made a system for me to attach it to the back of the tractor for the time being. So far it has scraped the yard, moved bales round and a multitutde of other jobs, it was considerably cheaper than the one in the link, fully restored, parts are available from the Old 20 Tractor Parts site. Ours is working for us and Father wants to take it to rally's in the summer! :)
