Right I have a few pounds to loose somewhere so gonna change diet habits! Also would like to get fitter ready for the polox season ahead. My question is what should I do to get fitter and how to fit it in!! I work full time as a teacher and have horses on DIY livery so I am very busy. I am at work by 7:30 and not home from farm until 7:30 in the evening at the earliest. Ideas please.
Ps I am the other side of 40!!! Is there any hope

How about using a push bike for some or all of your journey? Depends on your commute (mine's 70 miles so not an option for me). It worked a treat for a friend of mine, though.

Well as someone the other side of 40 too I'll tell you what worked for me. Firstly don't diet as it puts pressure on you & makes you food obsessed. I cut out as much sugar from my diet & the weight fell off me but I was never ever hungry. Sugar creates cravings & highs & lows. The food industry is obsessed with fat but sugar causes huge probs & is everywhere...prepared sauces/soups/reduced fat products have more sugar in to compensate etc. Exercise when you can but again make it something you enjoy & keep it light & fun..don't beat yourself up. Try cycling / walking to yard occassionally..will be far easier when gets lighter & hopefully drier! Do you have park runs near you? Free timed 5kms every Sat am for all levels & v friendly /encouraging. Basically i suppose I'm saying watch what goes into your mouth but don't overly focus on weight loss...it will happen!

I was well over 40 when I resolved to sort my weight out. Joined Slimming World & haven't looked back. Took me 2 years to loose nearly 2 stone & have kept it off for 4 years. But I still go to 'fat club' most weeks, cos I know if I didn't it would all go back on again.

I started in December. I can't bear the pressure of Jan 1st! So I did join a local gym, council run so not overly posh but close. I do not go to the gym......I go to the classes. Started with 2 x spin at 7.00 in the morning, now added on a body combat on sat am and now up to 3rd spin on Monday. Trying to fit as many sessions in over the holiday period and I am noticeably fitter. I do go with a friend which makes a huge difference! I also have downloaded a brilliant and FREE! app called My fitness pal. You set your profile, weight etc, then each day put in the food you eat and the exercise you do. It also works out What percentage of your food is carbs etc. easy to use and also brilliant as you can have a wobble and realise you have not fallen off to diet wagon.

Trying not to focus on dieting but eating better and knowing I can eat whatever I want, just a little less of it.. I also try to keep a tab on what I eat and how it impacts me, so I love toast for breakfast. However I have now found if I eat any white bread I have a dramatic sugar slump within a couple of hours, often the shakes so swapped to some food docter grain bread which doesn't do that to me.

This!
at one point i was commuting 10 miles (45 minutes to an hour) each way on my push bike and lost a stone in a month, while still having McDonalds or a greggs pie for dinner plus more often than not, a bag of sweets and far too often a bag of chips on the way home. The job didn't work out and I was VERY glad not to have to cycle that route anymore but the weight stayed off even over Christmas! If I had to go straight to the yard, it was another 6 or 10 miles (so another half an hour each way depending on the route) and some days I just couldn't face it and stopped off at home to borrow the car.
I started years ago with a 2.5 mile commute which took me 30 minutes to start with, cause I had to walk up the hill. By the end of the summer it was only taking me 13minutes, that hill didn't even register anymore and I ended up doing a 100k ride in aid of Christies in 4hours and at the end of it I felt fresh enough to go round again!
If cycling appeals, pm me, my bookmarks list is full of sites where you can get advice about getting started and staying safe, how to carry you work stuff or your kids on your bike (probably not your school kids, but for them theres bikeability) combine cycling with public transport, cycling in winter, etc etc
