hi all,

so i took my 8yo TB ex racehorse out on his and mine first hunt today and alot of you saidthe idea was darn right no and dangerouse but it was the best thing i have ever done!!

albeit it his first canter was terrible he took off in panic as the ground was crap and sticky and boggy he pulled up eventually and i nearly called it there and then but thing about me is i dont give up easy!! so i carried on got my rythem!

then we were a fab team lots of canters he was a true gent a born hunter!

although we didnt jump as i though the ground was to boggy and i wasnt sure about one or two of the jumps...maybe next time!!

he was one of best behaved horses of the day even when dogs and horses came flying past he was fab..

he only kicked a few horses but they shouldnt ignore my bloody red ribbon and let there horses sniff my bum!! bare in mind i stayed at the back aswell!!!

hes a horse of a life time best thing i ever bought i will not find another like him, he takes on everthing in his stride as if its nothing!! AMAZING LITTLE HORSEY!

below are some pics none of me unftunatly as i was on board but few of friends and (my nanny) of marleys head!!

!

I'm glad you had fun, sounds like a blast. I haven't hunted for 100's of years, but how can you say he was best behaved and then he only kicked a few horses:eek: I get the whole red ribbon thing, but is that where your responsibility ends as a rider? Not being snarky genuinely want to understand better.

I would say if you stayed at the back and wore a red ribbon not much else you can do really on a hunt field..... People know what red and green ribbons are for and should be being vigilant for these....

hi big ben,

no it doesnt end there but i can only do as much as i can and he only clipped them with a warning kick and they got to close i tried my absolute best to stay at the back out of the way and when we were waiting i stayed to the outside and then when everyone had to turn around to go back out the feilds we came in after standing i ended up at the front (i didnt know this would happen) so i stood my horse facing evenryine untull then passed and he attempted to kick out at a few and caught them! and someone also flew from the back of me (red ribbed on its tail also so at the back) and caught side of my horse so he kicked out but didnt catch it.....

there were alot of other horses actually kicking out and i believe i did my best to stay away and other people should have more respect and understading that if i say my horse is a kicker then u dont park ur horse up near mine simple.

other riders should have the resposibility to their own horses saftey to saty away if asked i am at the back for a reason.

other than that he was a perfect gent....

PS one of the huntmaster horses is a kicker and had red ribbon in his tail and he was in the middle all the time.

i honestly tried to stay out of that situation we were even that far at the back we were galloping next to the Quad bike!

but he happily cantered next to 6 other horses 4 of wich he didnt know and he didnt kick them and 11 horses zoon=med [past us and a fair few quite close behind in a walk trot and canter and he never reacted these few kick outs were rare for the day we were put and tbh they were reasonable as the other horses shouldnt have gotten so close any horse could have a bad moement and kick out whether a known kicker or not... im sorry but i will be carrying on hunting and i will again stay at the back hes a great horse and gallops and trots next to horses and doesnt kick out so i dont see an issue as long as people dont come near me when stood still them its ok as this is the only time he realy kicks out!

i wont the huntmaster thanked me for stayed out of the way just incases and there were far worse behanved horse there than i considering this was our first time out he coped very well!!

im sorry if the fact my horse likes his personaly space has hurt your feelings but i took every precaution nessesary and anyone that lagged behind me said they felt comfortable behind him and were fully aware he may kick if they got to close (which he didnt)

the horses he made contact with was barley and i checkecked them and so did their owners i never rode on and left them i am not an incosiderate person and i RESPECT THE HUNt and i am welcome back .... out of all horses there there were far more kickers than non kickers and they were all kicking!!!!! so please dont single me out because i was honest on a damn forum....

i wont tell next time when people ask for a full report i thought theyd like to know good bad and the ugly!!!

how many times can i say i made sure i was at the back on the lutside of the feild AWAY from almost all the horses

chill pill seriously, chill pill.

You did a report of your day, I asked a question because I wasn't sure of the etiquette, and one other person said maybe he shouldn't be out.

Real life check, anything you post will be questioned, that is what every horse board on the planet is like, and getting snotty wont help.

Now as to only posting pics and no text, I WAS going to ask....

Lovely pic of your guy, but is the strap for his nose band a little close to his eye? Now you can choose to interpret that as me making a snarky comment amount your tack, when actually it is a question from the clueless, who is trying to work out if her own figure eight fits her mare OK.

So don't assume negativity in a question, always remember the golden rule of horse boards, take the number of posters X 1.5 = the number of opinions on any given subject:D

i wasnt being snotty or not intentionally big ben honestly im just trying to justify myself but feel getting knowhere and hate conflict hes a genuine horse and i took all precautions... his grackle must have slipped or i didnt out it on correctly was in a bit of a rush as was late hacking to the meet! its ussually on ok.

my horse is genuinly a good horse he just likes his personal space and just gives a warning kick never full force and never hurtful i have had one on my leg off him,,,, i have tried everything to get him to stop but it doesnt work hes just stubborn.

but please i did take every precauton i could and stayed well out of the way where i could but as you problery know with hunting it can be difficult sometimes.

i will proberly continue to post it just hurts my feeling if people think im being incosiderate or not a resposible ride because i try my best to be.

thnks

I think the top strap is a bit high hence being close to the eye - the top strap should be a couple of cm's below the cheek bone, not on it/above it as these ones are.....

Glad you had a nice day Marli - just be aware that if your horse attempts to kick another horse, it is equally capable of kicking a hound - in that circumstance you may find yourself less welcome after that....

Hope that helps re the grackle!

Glad you had a good day - your boy looks lovely. :)

Regarding the kicking thing, I know how you feel. My boy wears a red ribbon and I try my best to stay out of the way but we still get people cantering up our back end! I think people get a little relaxed about the whole red ribbon thing - they know what it means but they think it is just there as a precaution and that the horse won't actually kick. My boy is a regular out on the Hunting field with my local hunt and most of the other regulars know to keep away from his back end now.

well done for giving it a go, and well done for taking the precautions you did re: his personal space/kicking. I would tend to agree that horses who are known to kick with intent to hit should not be part of the hunting field, but I would also say that Every rider needs to be aware of other horses and where they put themselves - it's not just 'kickers' who will lash out! and I don't think anyone can ever honestly say their horse has/will Never lash out. Ron is the least likely horse to do so I've ever met, but he'll buck if someone treads on his heels too many times.... and on that basis I can't say that your horse shouldn't be part of the field!

So keep taking sensible precautions as you did, and enjoying it!

and, if it helps, I got kicked by a masters horse on Saturday! The horse is known to buck, and I'd kept a respectable distance to one side as we came to a halt. The master then turned his horse away from me to get a better view of hounds, and as he did the horse bucked and caught the inside of my foot, and Ron's girth. Fortunately no harm (excluding bruises!) done, but it could have been much worse. I have a friend who got her femur broken by a kick from a bigger horse. She had to be air lifted to hospital and her leg was plated up and in an external fixator for months!
