Ive had my new young horse aliile while now. She is just 5 and has only hacked in the past.i hacked her out when i tried her and she was fine.Ive got her home and attempted just walking her around our schooling field and as soon as you take a rein contact even just basically holding the reins she shakes her head continuosly and chomps on the bit.She does this also when you put her bridle first on but then stops.Hacking out she is alot better and barely does it at all!ive tried riding her on a long rein and this is abit better but not much.Ive had all checks done teeth, saddle, back and shes fine. even when not on her if you tried to take the reins as if on her she does it.ive tried a range of different bits and non make a difference. Is this just because she needs more schooling?and a young horse thing?although ive had youngsters before ive never had this problem.I dont think its pollen it seems more about not liking the bit.Any advice would be great.ive also tried taking the noseband off and another bridle????/

I reckon it's her teeth. At 5 my youngster head-shook constantly, and only after a few months we could see his Tush teeth coming through. Once they broke the skin he completely stopped

thankyou for your reply i thought teeth straight away too and had them checked and rasped she had some sharp ones but nothing major and that was one over a week ago now.they couldnt see any woof teeth.what happened with your horse?

Well he would just shake his head continuously when being ridden, pull for the reins, and my hands would be raw by the end of it! I thought it was maybe because he was un schooled and very green, but like I said once the tooth penetrated the gum he stopped. For months we couldn't see any sign of a tooth growing but it can take a while for them to "hit the surface". Good luck :)

Thankyou for your reply i put her on the lunge tonight with a lunge cavasson on and no bit and she didnt do it at all!so definetly think its something in her mouth. thinking of trying my hackamore bridle to ride her in next to see if she does it then.Any other advice would be great.

Something else as well..have a look in her ears and see if there are any little flies in there or scabby bits. My boy gets little flies that attach themselves to the inside of his ear and this can also cause him to shake his head x
