New Zealand rug ideas

I have an old canvas New Zealand rug that has been hanging in my tack room for decades. I have a skip coming Monday to clear out general house stuff and was thinking I should put it in but I feel a bit sad about it.

Has anyone ever reused theirs for a different purpose? Happy to cut it up etc. I hate waste and the material is so tough it must have a use somewhere.

I hate waste too and probably wouldn’t throw it out. I’d be inclined to use it in some other way too, but am short of ideas currently as to what. What’s the inside like? Could you use it as a tough lining for an animal bed? Otherwise I think I’d use it to wrap things in for storage or something along those lines.

We wrap our xmas tree in old curtains for storage- could you maybe us it for that?

The inside isn't fluffy.it is thin grey wool. It is in perfect condition.

or an awning over a sitting area in the garden .

Thanks for all the ideas. Keep them coming. It's too smelly, probably had rodents running over it etc to bring into the house. I don't have a dog right now

I use old rugs to wrap the taps up to prevent them freezing in winter!

It doesn't need to stay smelly - once it's cut up you can give the bits a good wash.
It would make a really robust bag, like a canvas sports bag for tack etc.
Take all the straps off & keep them. Cut out the pieces for a simple pattern. Wash well. A bit of sewing-- et voila !!

I often use old turnout rugs to throw over a pallet with straw bales on to keep the rain off.

I've got a canvas hay bale bag and also a canvas hay feeder bag. I like canvas rugs too, I have 2 for my horse.

I use old rugs for repairs to other ones. I also have a couple tied around water tubs in the paddock to help keep them ice free in winter.

I was going to say find someone who makes bags, heavy duty ripstop canvas would make great bags.

Cut off any buckles and use to cover your car windscreen on icy nights! I did this with an old Weatherbeeta and we’ve been using it for a number of years. The chest straps get shut inside the doors so it doesn’t blow off. 5ft6 and it covers the windscreen perfectly - neck opening to the top edge of the wind screen Much cheaper that the foil backed Chinese windscreen covers. Can use it to shade too ….

I still have my late mares canvas one, no surcingle just legs straps and front straps, they were the best and lasted longer. Give to charity, but personally i would keep it.

Yeah. I do feel sentimental towards it as also belonged to my late mare.

Anyone else use to use a duvet underneath before under rugs were a thing?!

We used to buy old wool blankets from the Red Cross (I think they cost £1 each in the early 90s) as duvets were seen as too luxurious to use on horses! I don't think I saw a duvet used until the late 90s. It used to drive me nuts that however neatly you triangled the front of the under blanket (or duvet), and however securely you fastened the surcingle, by the morning the under-rug would be massively skew-whiff however perfectly positioned the jute rug still was. I don't miss the smell of dirty jute rugs and blankets either, they used to soak up the urine and musk like a sponge- I can see why day rugs were a thing.

I don't have any old canvas rugs left but I do have a clean old wool-lined jute rug, it's useful to see the suggestions on here as I should probably re-purpose it for something useful.

Yes, in the late 80's we did. A lady who worked at a laundrrette used to sell them and then wash them for people. We used to hold them in place by turning them back over a rug placed on top and used a surcingle as they'd slip otherwise.

Gosh I bet they were overheated. Mind you, winters were much colder then even though its only 35 years ago!

i don’t have any ideas on how to repurpose them, but i just thought i’d pop in to say weatherbeeta currently have a scheme where if you pledge to recycle an old rug in some way, you get £50 off a new one from them!

it does only apply to the more spendy rugs though, when i looked the cheapest one with the discount was still about £110

Yes we used a surcingle too! Only ever had one on our fully clipped horse but can you imagine using a 10 tog duvet on a horse now?! I'm glad the evolution of rugs has happened!
