Hi all,
I have been riding for a few years now but decided to go for a full loan recently. We noticed that our mare can't get enough of going straight for a tree in order to scratch her mane and is regularly scratching her fetlock on both legs. She loves a fuss and gets much relief if anyone scratches her legs for her. It was when I did this for her and thinned her mane that I notice what looks like 'dandruff' and feels a bit greasy. I have looked at other forums and mites have been suggested but as farm as I'm aware from her owner, she has recently had her mite injection.

Any advice will be most appreciated.

Thank you in advance 😊

Mite injections don't always work and it will only kill mites which are there at the time, not ones which have hatched out since or those which have been collected from the environment again.

Start with a bath in some insecticidal shampoo (Dermolene do a good one) and repeat 2wks later, in case its lice. Some horses will scratch when dirty and just prefer being kept as clean as possible too.

It could also be either sweet itch, you could try one of the treatments available from your local tack store to see if it helps. It's trial and error what works for each horse, if it is sweet itch. Or maybe some kind of dermatitis which might require treatment from the vet.

All I will say is tread carefully if this is only a part loan, some owners don't like their sharers too involved in making decisions about the horses care and might get offended if you suggest there's a problem. If its a full loan and the horse is your responsibility totally then its upto you which route you investigate first.
