Hi long time lurker first time poster here!

As title explains I’m living in Canada, Saskatchewan to be precise, but am originally from Stroud Glos. My family and I (husband and 2 kids) moved in 2006.

So bit about myself. Had a horse before moving New Forest called Dexter, he went to horseworld in Bristol and they kindly rehomed him for me. Last I heard he was still in first home and going strong (he would be 21 now)

3 months into moving I started having withdrawal symptoms and hubby let me buy Tonto a 4 year old palomino quarter horse. Well 3 years on and a new property purchased (home with 8 acres and a barn!) something I could only dream about in the UK I now have another 4 horses and run my own yard!

So next came Will, a standardbred former harness racer. Worked with them for a while at track and trainer offered him to me when he didn’t make it as a race horse. Then came Misty my daughters 4H pony she is a Shetland type in her twenties. Lady 11 year old registered Morgan and finally April late teens Arab that was going to be sent to auction and so probably ended up on a double decker.

Besides Chloe our collie and Taz the moggie we brought with us from England we now have Jack (Great Pyrenees) Jazz (not sure but was told dad was a husky x wolf) and Rascal (total accident as far as I know outcome was luckily healthy pup Husky x Shitzu!!!!)

So that’s it for now, just one last thing when you are cold just think about poor me outside working and feeding the horses with a wind-chill in the -40’s as that is what I have to put with regularly in the winter!!

Whereabouts in SK are you? I think that those temps would be a bit too much for me! I have a couple of palomino QH's too.

welcome to HHO! wow, you're so lucky, I would love to live in canada, it's lovely there! (apart from the cold!) please post plenty of piccies of your lot and hope you have fun speaking to us nutters!

This is so weird, but someone has just posted in All About Dogs (it's down there) about Husky x Shih Tzu pups for sale and we are all wondering what the flip they look like! Would you mind posting a pic?

Heya! Another ex-pat Canadian here: I keep making fun of the Scots for how everything shuts down here at the first snowflake...my pony's out without a rug on, and no hard feed, and is a round happy teddy bear!

I'm trying to imagine what a husky X shitzu would look like...pics are necessary!

I will try and sort out piccies later, suppose to be getting warmer for next couple of weeks but I doubt it will be above freezing. The snow fell beginning of December but probably won't go until middle of April!

All horses live out 24/7 except when the windchill is bad (last year we had -50's to deal with for a couple of weeks

) Then I just bring in my standardbred and the old arab. Everyone has access to big round bales and shelter, which they hardly use!

Rascal the Husky x Shitzu is very weird looking but cute he has huge paws but stumpy legs, will post pics later.

Live near Yorkton, we came over on Temporary work visas after hubby was offered a job here, very quick. From the moment we first decided to immigrate to actually arriving was 6 months. Much better to get job offer otherwise the wait is years.

If anyone wants any info on moving to Canada I can give you lots of pro's and con's if you ask me would I do it all over again I definably would.

Off to bottle feed a calf and do my weekly shop, speak later

Id love to know the pros and cons

Did you ship your horses out there? - Thats what I would have to do .... I couldnt bear to be parted with my lad!

You have brought back memories to me of friends we used to have, farmers who emigrated to Saskatchewan and bought a huge farm.

They used to come back to Britain annually and regale us with stories of 24 hr darkness in the winter, no neighbours for 50miles and miles and miles of farmland with no hedges or fences.

In those days, I used to think that was my worst nightmare!

But they absolutely loved their new life, new friends and farmer Dad had more time for hobbies and to spend with his family rather than the work work work he had over here.

Can we see piccies of your place/horses/pets please??

Sure just PM with anything you want to know. I wanted to bring my horse but couldn't afford 5500 pounds! OH said we could bring the dog and cat but put his foot down at the horse, besides he wouldn't of liked it here with these temps.

LOL I did see some of that. But no heated indoor arena here, but we might be moving in the summer to Brandon, Manitoba and I'm actually hoping to be able to haul to a heated arena, more chance of finding one there

No hedges but we are in what's called the parkland area so we have plenty of trees (thank goodness) but flat as a pancake. There is a saying here and it goes 'You can sit on your porch and watch your dog run away for hours' LOL

I love it very quiet our neighbours are a mile away and not many people. Saskatchewan is 2 and 1/2 times bigger than the UK but only just over a million people live here......Bliss
