Hi, been a lurker for a while and decided to come out the corner and say hi :)
Here goes, im moving house (currently in countryside moving to city) and unable to take Beau, my gelding with me. hes as sweet as sugar and will do anything. however he is 25 :( i dont know what to do with him, hes perfectly capable of being ridden, he loves it, would he be sellable, what do i do with him?
thanks

Find him a good home with the agreement that he'll be put down humanely when he hasn't a 'useful life' any more. If every owner feels they're entitled to some money back on their horse the only ending for them is going to be travelling from auction to auction until the meat man gets them. I strongly recommend you read 'Black Beauty' but Anna Sewell.

Personally no I don't think he would be sellable and would be rather sad to see such an old boy for sale. I would consider offering him out on loan as a companion. Your other options are a charity (rather unlikely as they really are struggling at moment with overflow of people who can't sell or afford their horse) or sadly PTS which may be a much better option than selling him at his age without knowing what will become of him.

Where are you? I wouldn't say he's 'sellable' unless someone is going to sell him on and lie about his age, but if he's still riding I or somone like me would gladly take him on permenant loan with an agreement to have him pts when he's ready to go, be that a year or 10 years. Or, as someone else suggested, a companion but there are a LOT of companions around at the moment so you might have more joy offering him as a quiet hack.

Difficult decision!!! I can only say what I think from what I personally experienced but your path may be a very different one...

I would...not move to the City, enjoy the countryside and look after your baby for as long as he is with you...

But then I would say that because due to horrible family problems I ran away to the City, lost my boy and have regretted it every day for the last 15 years, and I will do for the rest of my life.

Don't do the selfish thing, do the right thing, whichever way that might be ...:)

Please dont be confused, I shall explain. To ask on this forum if a 25 yr old horse is sellable, your words, you are sounding quite stupid. What do you think FGS! I would say NO! Sorry, I had to explain myself to you. At this moment in time there are rather a lot of horse welfare issues going on, and it saddens me to have confirmation that it is everywhere!!!

TBH, sorry but ^^^^this^^^^

ok where are you exactly? What is he capable off. Agree with another poster some people like me are looking for happy hack, but at that age would probably loan and agree PTS if need be when time comes. Unless I knew the horse really well to purchase at that age would possibly be a no personally.

Its trying to find that someone. or companion him/ loan if he isnt rideable but easy to do.

If at 25 he has major hangups and is not sound it probably would be good to PTS rather than let him fall into the wrong hands.

Good luck ignore the unhelpful comments.

I think you know the answer to this one anyway. At that age it is not good just to 'unload' the problem.

You have presumably loved this horse (?) and now owe him in his old age. Your options are to find a retirement home and give him a few years good retirement - this will cost £50/£60 per calendar month, alternatively offer him up for loan - but be realistic, you should anticipate that you will have to help with some ongoing costs (put aside a budget for extra vets, etc).

If you can't do that then I am afraid that your option is PTS. But, just remember, whatever happens you have to live with it!!

I will see around and see if anyone wants him. He'll make a good hacker, even a few fun rides.
If you don't have anything nice to say don't say it atall thanks

Not sure why there's such sarcasm in some posts. I used to hunt a 30year old pony & he returned to his breeder to act as a lead rein pony for her grandchild till he died eventually in his sleep.

I also used to event/hunt/SJ/XC a pony that was 26, I got him when i was 24 (about) & I would have brought him if we'd been allowed!

However I think it is probably better if you advertised as loan, as in the current climate much more likely than selling.. also (hopefully) safer in view of his welfare / stop selling on.

Fun rides? At 25?
Will he go hunting and jump 1m20 courses too?

Well I have done a fun ride on a 35 (Yes, Thirty Five) year old so it is certainly possible!

OP - yes, I'm sure there will be someone, somewhere who will buy your horse. Whether that person will do the best by the horse or not is a huge risk, and only you can judge if that risk is worthwhile.

No to selling. Loan is an option but not quite clear why moving to the city = no horse. I lived in London for 12 years and had my horses on part livery, going down after work. One of our liveries lives in Clapham and comes down after work 3 times a week after work so it can be done.

I would suggest you try asking on a sensible forum where you may find the relevant and sensible advice/answers.
Seems if you have a low number of posts here for whatever reason, your automatically classified as a Troll by the "clique".

I am sick to death of the replies of certain high and mighty people on this forum, it really makes me not want to post.

Why is it instead of supporting each other some people feel the need to be sarcastic and rubbish posters questions??

OP in answer to your question.. yes there may be someone somewhere who will take on your 25yr old but will you risk him being passed from person to person until he ends up at the knackers yard? A better option, as other people have suggested, is to look for a loaner or retirement home. I know what I would do in your situation!! Good luck :D

As the others have said I would try to loan him if possible, if he can be ridden even doing light work then this will keep him going and keep his mind active. If you were thinking of selling him dont think you would get much money for him but there are people lookiing out for nice older horses and not everyone wants them just for riding they can become part of the family as well. Good luck

Excuse me pastie2 who do you think you are???

The OP was asking if a 25yr old would be sellable. They didn't ask for sarcastic replies!!!

"Of course! If i got him could i compete at badminton? "

"Fun rides? At 25?
Will he go hunting and jump 1m20 courses too? "

These are ridiculous, uncalled for replies. What happened to supportive comments?

Brand new user who's first post is a controversial topic, just seems a bit suspicious. If the user isn't a troll then i'm sorry for my comment, and i think finding someone to loan your horse would probably be the best option.

When are you moving?
How long have you given yourself to find a home for your old horse?
And what sort of home are you looking for?

I have an older horse (23/24) and if i was in your position i could not live with myself if i thought he was being passed from pillar to post, in his twilight years.
We owe it to our oldies to either provide them with a retirement home ourselves, or make sure that they never suffer at anyone elses hands, ( pts)

I bought a 23 year old hourse for $1000 AUD, we still have him he is about 28 years old. He is lightly ridden, esp when the kids bring friends home from school, they can hop on him and he will walk trot and canter for them.

He does not look 28 could pass for 18 yrs, and could have another 5 years in him yet.

I know the horse market is slow, but there are lots of people who just want a confidence builder. The $$$ should not be important, but the home should.
