Just wanted to know how many other older novices there are on here. I am in my late 40's and help look after the most adorable Connie gelding. We have a field and he lives there. His owner has the benefit of free livery whilst I have the benefit of learning how to look after a pony and boy is there so much to learn! But I must say it's the most rewarding thing I have done and to see how far me and my boy have bonded is fantastic! I have always loved horses but haven't ridden since I was 13! Am I too old to start lessons again although I like to think you are never too old! Anyway just wondered if anyone else has come to the wonderful and fulfilling world of equines later on in life and how you are getting on:)

Welcome!
No, I'm one of those returning to it in later life - but I know there are some people on this board who started later in life. You are never too old or experienced to have lessons in any case!

Forgot to add: I am a novice, though!
I only rode at riding schools etc, and so my experience when I was little and in my teens was limited to grooming, tacking up and riding (not very well and intermittent due to financial constraints).

I also forgot to say that I know at least 3 people who only started riding after their 40ths.

Anyway, this proves that you can have senior moments and it still doesn't stop you from getting involved with horses. <g>

I started riding again at 48.

I learned to ride in my 20's and then spent the next 25 years doing other things.

I have now been riding seven years and I learn something new every time I ride.

Late 40,s ,thats no age at all. Find a good instructor who you can get on with. You dont want a flashy name who has no time for beginners . A good down to earth instructor who appreciates your enthusiasm to learn.I have been riding regularly for 50 years and horses still surprise me ,make a fool of me ,teach me ,occasionally bash me up ,listen when I have had a bad day. and generally be my best friend.

Never too old! I had never sat on a horse until I was 40! Started off with lessons for a few years and then bought a pony :) I've been riding for 13 years now and still love it :) Although I do sometimes feel my age and ache a bit more than I used to!

Highlight for me has been having a holiday with friends and our horses near the beach in Norfolk, like a dream come true :D

Good luck and welcome

Hi I started riding at nearly 50 and bought first horse for 50th birthday. I bought a dressage schoolmaster at 60 although he turned out to be a rather difficult ride and bought my new horse this year, I' 66 at Xmas. New horse is a 16.2 ex eventer, forward going and sensitive but with a lovely temperament but not a novice ride. it is never too late to start riding or in deed to challenge yourself in all sorts of ways. I take the view that I shall be a long time dead so whilst I'm alive and fit I want to live life to th full and if that means there are times when I'm out of my comfort zone, well, thqt's a good thing!
