Hello all, I'm a new member here although I've been lurking for a while. I wonder if you kind people out there could offer any tips? I've started riding again at the ripe old age of 50 after a 35 year gap. Less confident and flexible than I used to be but loving it. I'm very conscious (and my riding instructor keeps pointing out) that in rising trot I'm 'falling' in the saddle with a bump (sometimes the dreaded double bump) rather than landing in a controlled fashion. I'm also rising too high. I'm medium height and though not slim am not too heavy either but conscious to avoid bumping the pony's back.

I was taught to ride in the old days (not very well it seems) leaning forward slightly and gripping with the knees. The approach now seems to be to put your weight down into the the stirrups and drape legs softly around the pony. When we rise, is it from the whole leg, the knee or from the stirrup? and which bits of the body/muscles come into play to land softly? How can I rise less high but keep in rythmn with the pony?

Any tips or advice gratefully received!
