Hi there

I have recently backed my four year old Arab, not alone I hasten to add. I've done it under the experienced eye of my AI buddy who has backed many horses herself. The second day I rode him astride round the school he suddenly went down on his knees, I very quickly got off. The next few days went without incident. On our first little jaunt around the woods he suddenly tripped and ended up on his knees again. Before anyone asks his feet were only done 2 weeks ago.

Has anyone else experienced this with a youngster.

He is almost horizontally laid back and hasnt flicked an eyelid at anything thats been thrown at him, bless him.

Thanks

Could be that he is literally finding his feet, ie balance with someone on board. Also he could be getting tired quite quickly for the same reason & not picking his feet up high enough to clear the ground properly when tired. Try having shorter sessions, make sure you are not sitting to close to the shoulder, do not ask for manouveres that may unbalance a green youngster. Hope that helps, just a few thoughts.

I agree with the above, especially if his feet has only been done recently, make sure when you are riding that you are correctly balanced also, check your saddle is not slipping, this can restric shoulder movement :)

Saddle is good on him, its a Strada so sits slightly further back off his shoulders.

Both of his trips have been early on in the sessions which have both been short. he went better as the session went on, bless him.

He is a big lad (a good 15.2) so immaturity would fit, others have said the same to me too.

Thanks all so far for your suggestions:D
