I was looking at a New Zealand website Health Page about something else and came across this - anyone seen it publicized in the UK? I expect there is a report on the New Forest Equine Directory (NFED) but was just astonished that I read about it on a NZ site.
Five ponies killed in New Forest in a week
January 27, 2011
Five ponies have been killed in New Forest, in England, in a week - a grim toll that follows last week's news that the 2010 road toll was the lowest since records began in 1956.
The week's death equals the total killed for all of December.
The first accident, on Tuesday evening last week, claimed a brown mare at Hatchet Pond. The animal was wearing a reflective head collar.
It was followed on Wednesday by the death of a bay filly on Burley Road, Brockenhurst, who was also wearing a reflective collar.
On Wednesday, a bay filly at Deadmans Chase had be euthanised following a collision.
Friday brought a hit and run accident, in which a coloured filly was injured and had to be destroyed at Rushys Flat.
The second hit and run for the week occurred on Saturday, at Hatchet Gate. The bay filly had to be destroyed.
Another pony was reported hit a short time later, at Denny Campsite, but no trace could be found of the pony.
