next best fencing to post and rail??

If I can purchase it I will have 17acres to horse proof perimeter and section into large paddocks so would cost a fortune to post and rail it all. To keep costs down what alternatives are good for secure strong horse fencing? Any reccomendations?

I would post and rail the perimeter and devided into smaller paddocks by post and electric tape.


The perimeter fence has to be safe and strong.

Personally I would do post, top rail with electric along it, with stud netting (smaller holes than stock fencing) under it

Similar to the post above, do post and tornado horsemesh high tension fencing by a contractor, very small holes (2 inch square) no sharp bits, and no blundering through it like horses do with post and rail, nor chewing. For belt and braces you could have an electric rope on insulators along the top if you wanted but not required. Can get any height but 4 foot would be normal if no wire above. No need for top rail if high tension,

Or, normal stock mesh BUT with long offset insulate arms with mains electic rope to keep horses away from the stock mesh. This would be a lot cheaper both to buy and also to install since it doesn't have to be high tension as its lighter. mesh, unlike the heavy horsemesh. would need a wire at the top if standard height.

It really depends on budget and how much compromise/risk you can take.

Horsemesh would be the best but it ain't cheap. However it may not cost more than post and rail and I think it's superior. Post and rail might be cheaper if you are DIYing but requires a lot more maintenance.

I -have 14 acres edged with broken hedging and ditchs. I have posts and polyrope on a mains energiser with battery back up and a sim command unit so I cam check it remotely. Just the posts and the gates cost 2k, then the labour , the energiser unit cost £500, but the only thing they chew is my nice Jackson gates.
I found it cheaper to source the posts and rails my self as I knew what quality I was getting and then pay the labour. If you so it after harvest you may get a man and a tractor for £20 hr

I'd split into paddocks using that really wide electric tape - its wide and solid enough, you could get away with just 2 strands of it, fixed onto normal posts.
